The days of my journey to becoming a clothing technologist are starting to become more meaningful. In the past weeks we were taught the elements of design. We had to learn the techniques of using space, line, shape and color into our designs, and to figure these things out by ourselves. I believe that I still need to do a lot of self-studying, especially on designing clothes by structure and not just by the actual printed lines on clothes. Wearability is also one thing I still need to work on. It takes a lot of practice and hard work to be able to make good designs by using these said elements, so I have to keep putting my heart and mind to everything I do.
In addition to studying the elements of design, I looked up biographies of famous fashion designers, such as Alexander McQueen and Coco Chanel. Both have very interesting life stories, and I could clearly see the connection of their stories and personalities to the designs they make. Doing this activity also made me feel that I could become an amazing designer like Chanel and McQueen, too. My life may not be as colorful as the fashion designers and artists that I admire, but I can use my daily, even my ordinary experiences as inspiration for my designs. After all, life in itself is a miraculous thing and there is still so much to learn.
To make my learning experience more fruitful, I am going to follow the New York Fashion Week online, which, I’ve read, will start in two days or so. I’m pretty excited to take down notes and gain new knowledge from the designers that will be participating in the event. I also found another designer that matches my style, which is Zimmermann. I especially like their lacy and pastel designs.
