Cloud Empress sprites
No disrespect to any of the recent acquisitions — draw steel, daggerheart, cairn — because I do sincerely wanna try em all, but Cloud Empress has arrived.
Maybe because I kickstarted it like 2 years ago, but I’m putting it at the top of the pile. (Until the next book I’ve forgotten about backing shows up.)
Certainly the most gorgeous of any physical game books I own, and just chock a block full of ideas I’d love to explore with the right group of true Nausicaä-heads. Delirious.
Character Creation Challenge, Day 14: Cloud Empress
A very aesthetic one.
Cloud Empress is one of those games that call to you, not for its mechanics but for its world. It's one of those grounded fantasies that are still very much fantastical and it is not grim, at least not at first glance.
The art is beautiful, and it helps you get the vision of this world, a very unique yet familiar in some odd sense. Monochromatic yet colorful and coloful yet odd. It has a vibe and if you love it, you'll fall in love with it.
Okay, let's make this odd character.
Mei is a travelling healer. Always helping those in need around her. No one knows why she travels but she is always a hopeful, sweet person, helping and not discriminating who she helps, she just helps. She wears a necklace with her, sometimes people ask about it, and she dismiss them, saying it is not that important. She is not a good liar.
I think this is one of those characters that is too good to be true and then you figure out their secret and you are like "i knew it". Also, its been a while since i made a mage character and probably the first time i made a healer.
The mechanics are not that complicated, but it is one of those games that you play for the world rather than the mechanics. There was a local table for this game and i sometimes regret not going. Maybe, if someone i know or some club i know runs this game, i would be willing to try it. I want to explore this world.
The stars say spring should come. But the stars are dimmed and the frosts continue. This winter was hard – heralded by thunder – bringing with it muddy snow. There are those unaffected by the winter’s icy grip. The elusive Timbrilin still bring medicines down from their snowy peaks. They must have captured the sun’s fire, stole the warming spring, leaving behind muddy rain.
We will get it back, we will free the sun, and the Timbrilin … the Timbrilin will pay for their hubris.
Stolen Summer is a single session adventure for Cloud Empress: Land of Cicadas with opportunities for combat, diplomacy, and overcoming prejudices. The fates of hundreds hang in the balance. It includes a simple mass combat interlude that the players can influence its outcome, two new creatures, and an regional environmental effect that can influence other adventures.
Content Warning: famine, mob violence.

It could just be that I need to read more hex crawls and OSR/NSR content, but I really don't think there's anyone who is out putting the same amount of material at the same high quality level with such consistency as watt is with Cloud Empress.
Every time I crack these booklets open I get giddy with how they're written. What is there and more importantly what isn't is always just the perfect balance to get my mind working... how do these things connect? How do I want them to connect when I run them? It's just so JUICY!!!
I have a lot more to say, but I'll probably get into it as we actually start running next year.
never kill yourself
