“This is the seventh Flaming Lips album (they’re on their 17th studio album now, not counting over a dozen more EPs, live albums and random weirdness) and it’s as brilliant and bonkers as the rest of their output. Released in 1995, it came just before the innovative envelope-pushing Zaireeka, which I confess I have yet to hear, since it requires 4 separate turntables (or CD players) playing 4 separate discs simultaneously. Following that logistical and sonic experimentation was The Soft Bulletin, their ‘breakthrough’ album that took them on a trajectory from largely unknown indie psychedelic garage band, to critic’s darlings and the thinking person’s go-to festival-band hippies. . I’d argue that Clouds Taste Metallic is the pinnacle of their ‘early period’, where they have perfected their sound which is something like the slightly ramshackle playing of Pavement with the otherworldly and often delightful harmonies of Brian Wilson, only on a lot more acid. The album also features the first track referencing Christmas. For those Lip Lovers will know that this is something of an obsession for Wayne Coyne, culminating in 2008 with the full-blown self-produced film and it’s accompanying album, Christmas on Mars. . There’s some fantastic song titles on this album – a strong feature of most if not all Lips’ albums, along with Wayne Coyne’s idiosyncratic and often inscrutable lyrics: Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus With Needles, and Guy Who Got a Headache and Accidentally Saves the World being but two worthy examples...” .
