Undertale Yellow - Legacy of Justice
These are my personal thoughts on what happened in RWBY vol. 7 episode 12. It is about spoilers regarding a certain lucky boi and I am totally up for people debating with me about it.
So, as a fanperson, I find Clover’s death to be tragic. I literally cried. It was really upseting since I shipped Fairgame super hard. Qrow has been my favorite character for a while and I was so excited for him to get a bf/so. It was growth for him and it meant a lot to me. Clover was Qrow’s emotional support and only real friend other than a bunch of teenagers. And then they murdered him, which seemed really cruel.
I was pissed and ranted to my friends for quite a while about how much I hated it. I took a break from being angry and decided to look at it from a different perspective. The perspective of a writer/storyteller. Here is what I have decided:
There are two main good reasons why you should kill a character in a story. I will include examples for each reason.
1)Their death is important to continuing the plot.
Lets look at Pyrrha for a moment. Now Pyrrha’s death was sad, really sad. But it pushed two seperate plots. The first plot is the main plot. If Pyrrha had not died, the danger and evilness of Cinder and what she had done would not have been as real to the girls of team RWBY. It made the pain and loss much more personal for the girls, which pushed Ruby to start her adventure. Sure, they had just lost their school, but losing a person you are close to hurts so much more. If Pyrrha had not died, and Ruby had not tried to save her, Ruby probably wouldn’t have felt strong enough to try and go on the mission to Haven. Pyrrha’s death motivated Ruby to try and change the world around her so that she wouldn’t lose any more friends. Pyrrha’s death also moved Jaune’s story arch. If Jaune had not lost the person who love him, and who he unwittingly loved, he would never have pushed himself. If he wasn’t fighting to keep her memory alive every single day, he would never have gone with Ruby and would never have become a stronger person. So Pyrrha’s death helped these two story arch’s move along. I really hope that makes sense.
2) If the character is useless to the story and a hindrance to the writers.
Roman Torchwick. He originally was going to be a small bad guy in season 1 who didn’t last long in the show. But he was popular, more popular than CRWBY ever expected. So they wrote him a bigger part and kept him around. But in season 3, CRWBY had big plans for season 4, and Roman Torchwick didn’t fit in the overall story arch. He was a small villein who would have to have a huge personality change to stay relevant in the bigger plot of things. He would have been a hindrance to the writers, a lot of extra work for them. By killing him off, they kept the story going smoothly, without putting in a bunch of unnecessary work.
Clover’s death does not fit in either one of these types. Now, there are a few other small reasons, but these are the two big ones that work most of the time. We didn’t know Clover enough and he wasn’t a big enough character to fit in the first one. At the most, it will hurt Qrow’s story arch and personal growth, but since they didn’t get a lot of screen time together, I highly doubt it. THe second death reason doesn’t work because he has only been in 12 episodes. If he got too hard to write after only 12 episodes, then they should have never created him in the first place.
The only way for Clover’s death to work is for them to reveal huge information about him that will explain why his death is so important after the fact. But I feel like that information after the fact will feel weak and forced. My sister thinks that they can resurrect him, but that seems like a stretch for me. So basically, Clover’s death was pointless and only put in to either keep Qrow from happiness or just for the sake of murdering a person. I totally think CRWBY wasted a lot of potential with his character.
My addition to the RT insight. I really hope they get the message and give us our lucky boi Clover back.
forcing myself to rewatch episode 12 over and over again in order to write a good rewrite where Clover doesn’t die. But it’s really hard to see what I’m writing when I’m crying...
