“The Search” by Clover Hill

Alright, bet-

This little boy is Clover! He's the main character in this story.

His mom and dad didn't want to be responsible for a child, and his grandma insisted that she wanted to take care of him instead of leaving him at an orphanage, so he lives with nana Ellie!

Nana made that blanket for him, it helps him remember things and feel safe when stuff makes him nervous or scared, whenever he makes a new memory, the blanket gets a new piece!

He's very anxious most of the time, especially around new people, so he rarely talks, but is always thinking about everything and everyone he meets.

Clover has a best friend named Anne, she's a very grumpy looking girl that likes unusual and spooky things.

She has long black hair and usually wears dark colors, especially purple. She has a skull hairpin and cherishes it.

She doesn't hang around a lot of people because she finds them annoying and rude, but she became friends with Clover as soon as they started studying together.

Anne has two moms, but they're usually not around much, because of work and because they always want time for themselves, so she's very independent and way too mature for her age.

When Clover can't talk or stand up for himself, Anne does. She's blunt and honest and usually gets in trouble because of it, especially with the mean kids and teachers.

Anne always wants to help Clover and doesn't understand why she cares so much, she doesn't realize she has a crush on him.

Whenever Clover has trouble with his memories and decides to look for other pieces of the blanket, Anne tags along "just to make sure he's safe"

Clover gave her a flower once, she keeps it inside her diary.

Nana Ellie is a sweet old lady who takes care of Clover. She's a widow and always talks about how her wife would've been so proud of Clover for being such a strong little man.

Ellie is also a witch but has never told many people about it. Other than making it known, she prefers to give gifts to the people she loves so they're always safe, even if she's away.

Clover's blanket is magical and each piece contains a memory of his, Nana made it so that he can travel to his memories, and still be safe.

Imagination has an affect on magic and makes it so people and scenarios that have happened turn into weirder, more exaggerated things, from a child's perspective of the world

Clover has had his fair share of sad memories, so his imagination turns it into scary things, to keep him from thinking about it much, but they're also part of his journey and he has to face it sometimes.

For example, if he remembers his mom yelling at him, before he went to live with his grandma, he imagines a big monster roaring and growling at him while he's unable to move or say anything.

I originally thought of this as a way to vent, but i got very attached to the characters, and i think it'd be an interesting way to show that all of our memories makes us part of who we are!

I love love love how H.G. Parry writes fmcs, especially how *real* they are. Both Biddy and Clover are so intelligent, clever, and kind, but they also have their flaws which we can totally understand. Most especially I like how both stories don’t kill their idealism although they certainly could have. They still both fight for a better world. I think especially as we see some reduction of women in media it’s nice to read books like these.
