If you ain't first, you're last!
Character fact: Clovis actually likes animals, especially cats. Important protip: Anthros are not animals. --- This has been a part of his character for quite a while, since I was working on his backstory pre-war and decided he'd have a pet cat. Clovis just really feels like a cat guy to me and I think him liking animals so much is an interesting layer to him that conflicts with his Apex protocol. May have also been inspired by an old DK comic for Endtown with the Russian Topsider who also liked certain animals but didn't differentiate Anthro and Animal in comparison. This particular image was made during the CRAB tourney where I really got to play with Clovis dropping his guard and hate in his heart when confronted with a really fat and genetically unfortunate cat.
SM couldn't talk but people can understand what he means when he 'nyah's which I had to play with for fun. The artist for SM was also very receptive to this dynamic at the time.
This was pretty hard-won because I had to beat Scary Movies in R1 to achieve this in the first place. But it was nice while it lasted. Clovis pretty unwittingly got attached to Scary Movies, unaware of how dangerous this cursed creature actually was, and paid the price in Round 2 which stands as the source of his downward spiral and attitude during R3.
Happy Halloween! Here's a werewolvis, inspired by Clovis' R2 Crab design below :)
Clovis' CR4B Masterpost! Take a Clovis about a week before the start of Topside Tales, what do you suppose will happen if you offer him a wish of untold power? This whole tournament, that's what! Entering the Tournament Coffee With Ms. Berry First Meeting With Zehya Where There's Smoke Meeting the Team Such a Mess (novella) ROUND ONE Faith and Facts (novella) Xenomania Assessment ROUND TWO When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies Shards of Expectation (novella) ROUND THREE Post-Nuke
This is pretty much all I got right now, there may be more post-tourney content later as an epilogue and there's some smaller contextual stuff missing either because my opponents contributed to the overall story and don't have easily accessible links to their comics or I haven't hosted some of the images that only go for one or two drawings yet. Some contexts like Clovis' attachment to Scary Movies (the white cat) or Diana Berry may be missing some links because of this but mostly this covers the breadth of Clovis' participation and all the content I poured work into. The novellas filled in some narrative holes and were a fun exercise in creative writing for me!
For some reason I wasn't allowed to reblog to continue this chain but that's fine I can just do this.
I'll be honest, I thought you stopped following because of that 'Beat a Furry Day' joke I reblogged a while back, I didn't know Joel would be that much of a filter on his own. That said, I don't really understand how Joel is so offputting when he's (generally) right about Clovis and Clovis himself is someone who pretty plainly deserves his treatment. Joel's an asshole but he is by and large far lesser a dick than Flask who is like a dark mirror version of him taken to full extremes. I think I've said a few times in the threads, even here, that Clovis is a typical Topsider who did Topsider things before TT and the point of his dream sequence was about that. Joel's a father and tasked with protecting N.O. from obliteration and namely the Topsider threat.
They both have things on the line and prioritize accordingly. Finally, I'm not sure what you mean is confusing? Is it that Joel is waving off the potential of finding a cure because he thinks Apex already knows how it works and is letting everything happen for the sake of controlling all of humanity? That's still only his theory, and given Clovis was already shown to have misgivings about Apex at the start of TT (and again mentioned by Bernard and Sue in the chapter before Turned Tables) he's liable to seriously consider things like that even if he wants more than anything to believe it isn't true (which was the point of the detector going nuts when he unwittingly lied about always trusting Apex's word).
I thought I set up pretty well that Clovis has cognitive dissonance regarding Apex, how he distrusts them and at the same time how he does mental gymnastics to find an escape from disturbing considerations he might be forced to face head-on but maybe it's too subtle? Joel's the sledgehammer to that mental mechanism of his, really forcing him to think about things he normally wouldn't.
