So anyways, this is fanart for @circus-clangen , specifically my fankits for their OC Clownwish. I’m very fond of them. Their names are Ropestripe, Stiltleg, Lionroar, and Dovetrick

Stiltleg got into a bad accident as a kit, resulting in burns on their forelegs and face, which led them to wearing that mask and those slutty little leg warmers

Recently my friends jester/scare couple had a clutch of eggs and I ended up adopting one of them. Both parents are very colorful and neon and both are a jester/scare mix breed but when the egg hatched the clown was monochromatic and too gentle looking to be scare. We are pretty sure that the parents only have jester and scare genes so I had to ask- Is this normal? I had prepared for a jester/scare but now I'm not sure if I can take care of them with those resources in mind :( any advice?

Don’t worry, clownlings are naturally hatched monochromatic. Their carapace will most likely develop to be more colorful as they grow. If you’re particularly worried, be sure to feed them processed sugary foods with the best food dyes on the market, or buy some clown milk at the supermarket. The clown milk trade is dubious at best, but for the health of your clownling it may be worth it to you.

Also, scare clowns claws and teeth grow in later, one wouldn’t wish to harm their caretakers or their siblings, would they?

Top doodle takes place 2 seconds after the Clownlings’ warrior ceremonies and the bottom is comparing Dovetrick and Lionroar to their mama because they have the closest resemblance to her. And also I wanted to resign her. I’ll make an art dump of previous Clownling art soon I promise

And this is how Clownwish met his baby Mama, who I imagine is named Pumpernickel. She’s a big, scary lady who wandered into the circus looking for a good time one day, and Clowby was all too happy to show her around. Somehow his freak matches hers and they had a little fling before parting ways. And then a couple moons later Pumpernickel tracked him down and dumped the days-old Clownlings onto him and basically said “They’re your problem now peace out lmao”

Pumpernickel is not important to the story and never shows up again but I still kinda like her

The Clownling’s naming ceremonies! This takes placs a half moon after a caravan fire broke out that left Stilty with some nasty burns, so they’re still pretty banged up. Everyone else is fine tho

Side note, papa Clown wanted to name Ropestripe himself but Ropey insisted on getting his name with his sibbies because… well, they’re his sibbies, no matter how much they fight

Clownling dump ahoy! I sent all these as asks on @circus-clangen ‘s blog so that’s why I never posted them anywhere else until now

This og post that started it all, these were the beta designs for the Clownlings. Ropestripe’s design has remained the most consistent with his og verison

Clowndad doodles and how the Clownlings cane to be

OG DESCRIPTION:

Clownwish had a very brief fling with some random molly for a few weeks, it was never meant to be serious. But miss molly wasn't pleased to find herself pregnant and, as soon as they were born, immediately tracked down Clownwish and foisted these kits into his paws. She only said, "They're yours. Take them" before sauntering away, never to be seen again. Clownwish couldn't even refuse because it all happened to so fast.

And then he sat there on the outskirts of the circus, alone in the cold, dark silence with tiny little kittens in his paws, no more than a couple days old. He never thought he'd become a father, it was all so sudden. And he didn't even know what to do with kits, it was just him, his dad, and Tigertoe for so long, he has no idea what kit will be like.

He really, really considered leaving them outside to die, pretending that this never happened at all. They were young, it was cold out, they were probably hungry, he didn't even have to do anything to them. He could literally just leave them in the grass and either they would die or one of the humans would find them. Either way the problem was taken care of, easy peasy!

But... he supposed they were kinda cute, and Tigertoe was expecting anyways, so he could easily foist them onto her and they'd be out of his hair. Easy!

After some explaining, Ringstar was surprised but reluctantly allowed his kits to join. Tigertoe seemed surprised too, although more out of a "how did any molly find you attractive" kind of way, but she obviously won't turn away kits, especially with her own litter so near.

For the first few days Clownwish was hesitant around the kits, and wasn't really sure what to do. Both Tigertoe and Trapeezetangle insisted on him coming to visit them since he IS their father, so he reluctantly hung around the nursery for a while. It stayed like this for the first week, until Tigertoe insisted he hold them for a little bit so she could get some rest. They were napping so it wasn't hard to move them

Clownwish still wasn't sure what he was supposed to be doing, although he was curious since he'd never seen real kits before. They were... warm, and smelled like milk, and so, so fragile. They were barely the size of his paw, just one move and they'd be dead.

They were so soft too, so round and... cute, yes, they were cute, especially when one of them yawned and made the cutest little squeak, and oh his nose is so small and pink, like a button-

And it was that moment where Clownwish fully gave into the cute baby syndrome and became a dad

Clown as a dad isn't perfect, obviously. It's clear who his favorites are (coughcoughRopestripeandDovetrickcoughcough), he tends to let the kiddos wail on each other and doesn't really punish them, and he tends to put them in dangerous situations, like showing them the lion's den or letting them paint with deathberries. But he's also laid-back, fun-loving, involved, and is very proud of his kits, except Stiltstripe because the universe hates them. Overall, considering the model for fatherhood skill he had, he didn't do THAT bad of a job

How can I tell if my clown is a clownling or not?

Hello, dear one, I am most pleased to answer your query! Similar to dogs, clowns can come in smaller breeds that may, at a first glance, resemble the young of another species. In fact there have been many a miniature porcelain accosted by another clown who assumes it is an unattended hatchling.

However, there are some tells. Clownlings, when first hatched are blind, sticky and have no arms, instead toddling about on their hind legs, their frills still wetly plastered to their backs. They also tend to be only one color, camouflaging with the remains of their egg or the rest of the nest.

Then, small nubs form where the arms are, and the clownling opens its eyes. It eventually forms other colors and becomes more vocal and independent. It then grows to size depending in its breed. Sometimes, as with miniatures, this growth stage is very short. Otherwise, as in the case of stiltwalkers this growth stage is prolonged.

So if you dont know if a clown is a clownling or not, check the consistency of its body. Is it sticky? Does its body feel perhaps have the heft and texture of a gummy candy? Is it only one color? 

If so, you probably have a clownling on your hands. Adult clowns of small breeds will have firmer bodies and more colorful carapaces.
