At its heart is co-regulation—the biological process where residents help each other manage overwhelming emotions. Co-regulation is where it all starts. Before a child can regulate themselves, they need to feel it through you first. Your nervous system becomes the anchor, your breathing, your tone, your presence is what their brain is reading in every moment. When a child is overwhelmed or dysregulated, it’s not a behaviour problem, it’s a nervous system asking for support. This is where you step in, not to fix or control, but to bring calm into the space, maybe that’s sitting close, slowing your breath, humming, using a steady voice or just being there without saying much. Over time, their nervous system begins to mirror yours, and that feeling of safety gets wired in. That’s how self-regulation is built. Connection first, always.

A simple way to build co-regulation is to sit or lie next to your child and bring your attention to your own state first. Slow your breathing right down, in through your nose, longer out, and let your shoulders drop and your body relax. Stay quiet and present, without asking them to do anything. If it feels right, sit close or gently place a hand on their back so they can feel your rhythm. Let them pick up on you rather than directing them. If they start to relax, just stay there for a minute or two and allow that calm to build. You’re not teaching with words here, you’re giving their nervous system something safe to tune into.
