But this gray area can also confuse people about what qualifications you need to be a coach.

I’m going to clear up some of the confusion in this article, and show you things you’ll need to become a great coach.

New Gear to Support New Goals

I did it, I went for it, I bought a Garmin. Eek. This was my first week wearing it and so far so good. Ok, not exactly true but sort of. The Garmin at the track was more of an exercise for my button pushing fingers but whatever. The other morning, I am not sure what happened, but I recorded half of my run- all user error, not the fault of the Garmin. I will master timing my laps and such but this is not my area of expertise but I am an accomplished button pusher, there is no question about that! 

I picked this model, the Forerunner 220, because it is smaller than the big square one and it does not link to my phone. The reason running is so great, in my estimation, is I am not looking at my phone so I certainly do not want access to it on my wrist. Plus, there were glowing recommendations for it all around. 

Now, please do not look forward to additional pictures of my new watch sharing my splits. Unless I win something, a big something, and even then, do not expect to see more photos of what my Garmin is tracking. Boring. 

The other huge news is I have a coach to send and share this data with. Other things to learn: what exactly what it means to have a coach. My motivation for this change was simple, I want to run a good, solid marathon this Fall, I want to be prepared, I want to train smart. There are at least a zillion options for training plans online and I have gone that route every other time I have trained. This time it dawned on me that there must be a better way. Enter my coach. 

A huge perk to my job at Pacers Running is there are accomplished runners everywhere, it is a surreal situation. When I asked my now coach if he would do this for me he totally downplayed his knowledge; I don’t fully grasp what I have lucked into yet. At this point he is trying to figure out what I am all about and use the information the Garmin provides to give a beginning point for training. It is so funny to explain quirks that have been normal for years. Yes, I run at the track every week, no I do not know why I have been running the workouts my friend’s coach gives her for 10 years? It just is. When he asked me to send him the races I have registered for he wrote back and said register for nothing else before we talk. Why? Because you have a coach. There is a learning curve here. 

So far, I have strict instructions to eat something right after a workout. Eat something. That is hard for me but I am doing it. Don’t tell, but the other morning I ate 1/2 a cupcake in the car on the way home from my run. I think it would be acceptable, a cupcake is food, right? 

Marine Corps is far away but I am getting really excited to see what this training cycle brings. When I said I want to qualify for Boston my coach said that is easy. We shall see, to me there is 0 easy about it but I am willing to give it a go.
