Barangay peace officer Wilfredo dela Torre has found solace in Araceli’s rich coastal resource from the depleted fisheries of his parent’s hometown in Northern Cebu where their fishing efforts would often bring them merely three kilograms of fish (“Mostly ngirit-ngirit,” he says. Lizardfish is considered a low value and non-targeted species among Araceli’s fisherfolks.). A community protected natural mangrove estuary leading to a vast sea grass bed off the coast of Barangay Dalayawan helps keep a continuous supply of rabbit fishes (bararawan and samaral) for artisanal fishermen like dela Torre who have called Araceli their home.
