The island town of Araceli sits at the nexus of Palawan’s fish basket that serves both local and international consumers. It is one of the host sites for multinationally funded coastal resource management projects of the World Wide Fund for Nature. The town now looks into low-impact ecotourism to diversify the livelihood base for its people. Pamelan Festival is a week-long celebration of the bounty from the sea. “Far lights”• Lights of commercial fishing boats beyond Langoy Island are vissible from the town beach of Araceli on the first night of Pamelan Festival. There has been a clamour from coastal fisherfolks and municipal officials to increase the tariff on commercial fishing vessels benefiting from Araceli’s rich fishery stock. The measure will allow Araceleños to benefit from large scale fishery that harvests natural stock that are spawned in its community protected reefs.
