WWF-Philippines goes digital for Earth Hour 2020
Despite the increased community quarantine (ECQ) over Luzon, the annual Earth Hour celebrations continued on March 28, but with digital activities to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The Earth Hour has been held annually for 13 years and is considered the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment. Since the first “Lights Out” event in Sydney in 2007, the movement has continued to bring individuals, businesses and governments together to work towards a future of environmental integrity in which people live in harmony with nature.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life as a result of the COVID 19 outbreak and think of the families who have lost relatives or are sick. In this hour of crisis, we must unite more than ever to secure our future and the future of our planet. It is a time of solidarity and a time to react more creatively to challenges and to work more collaboratively. That is why Earth Hour is characterized by digital events around the world, ”said Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International.

In the country, WWF Philippines commemorated Earth Hour 2020 entirely online. Before switching off, the national ambassadors of the WWF Philippines, Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez, moderated an Instagram live stream entitled "Conservation Conversation", in which the two ambassadors spoke about the environment, climate change and volunteering, and their experiences with the WWF -Philippines. The livestream ended at 8:30 p.m. to make way for the annual shutdown. The WWF Philippines then hosted an online watch party, which consisted of video clips from the nature documentary series "Our Planet", which were created in cooperation with Netflix, Silverback Films and the WWF International network.

“Our whole life, our joys and sufferings take place in our only home. In the pandemic crisis, the WWF Earth Hour signals a strong call for solidarity with each other and with our planet. We have to confirm it now more than ever. Conservation is not just another endorsement; it should be our second nature. This is the only way we can change the end, ”said Maria Isabel Garcia, Chairman of the Board of WWF Philippines.
“In the midst of this crisis, we are all reminded that we are connected and we can only address this, we are acting as one. Earth Hour calls for our common and sustainable response to environmental concerns. We have to recognize what is important, ”added Joel Palma, managing director of the WWF Philippines.
While the WWF Philippines is celebrating another successful Earth Hour, the movements continue to receive pledges from private companies and government agencies.
“One of the biggest challenges the world faces today is to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. As a developing country that is no stranger to destructive natural disasters, it is imperative to ensure that we are proactive and responsive to the environmental problems we face, ”said President Rodrigo Duterte in a message to celebrate the movement.
The office of Vice President also promised the movement. “The problems we are facing and their impact are urgent and real. Polar ice caps are melting, species are disappearing from the planet forever, and the weather is changing due to human activities. But not everything is lost yet, and if we get together now, a solution can be found, ”Vice President Leni Robredo said.
Aside from Earth Hour 2020, the organization's Filipino office has launched a new campaign to convey a sense of urgency in dealing with the environmental crisis. #ChangeTheEnding and Earth Hour 2020 serves as a gathering point for the next five years of maintaining the organization.

Even more, during this global pandemic, let Earth Hour be the time when our connectivity shines through as we show solidarity to care for one another and for our common home. It is imperative that we maintain these positive actions beyond the hour that we can change change for our collective future, ”said Atty.
