Cat colour/marking identification riddle

My new kitty Ponyo comes from Spain and has quite an interesting combination of markings. I’d never seen orange facial stripes before, and her coat seems to be a mix of tabby and tortie markings. Is she as unusual as I think?

She was a colony cat in Spain, so nothing is known about her parents. Her tail has clearly had trauma and I assume that’s why it’s short.

i didn’t know schipperkes came in colors other than black and i feel so cheated. they’re all so cute!!! luca is so cute!!!!!

Yes, I get this one a lot! The Australian and UK breed standard allows for other colours. Schipperkes come in black, yellow or brown – like labs. Sometimes rare colours can happen too, like dilutes or tanpoint. I wrote a long post about it here.

I am in lots of schipperke groups on Facebook and this year seems to have brought an influx of brown schipperke puppies. There is one person who has a black, yellow and new brown schipperke in their family. You can follow them on Instagram @ghost.bear.teddy.

I was looking through my family’s big, fat, 900+ page dog book when I came across the schipperke. I was reading about it and in the section about their coat it read that it is most often black. I found the cool because Luca is a brownish yellow color meaning that his coat color is uncommon.

Schipperkes come in a host of colours, but in the US and Europe the breed standard is only black. Most commonly schipperkes come in black and yellow, sometimes brown – basically the same as labs. But they can also be dilute, black and tan, etc. The UK and Australian breed standards allow for any solid colour. I did a post about it here.

I follow a lot of cream coloured schipperkes on Instagram and through schipperke Facebook groups. My favourite is @casperthewonderschip on Instagram, he looks and acts so much like Luca, but he is much cuddlier (I am jealous!).
