James Oswald and Anne Donovan

Over the last few days as part of #Encounters2014, North Lanarkshire Libraries has hosted a variety of great authors with many more to come.

On Tuesday night #Coatbridge Library hosted #JamesOswald. James gave the crowd a fascinating insight into his meteoric rise to writing fame in the last couple of years and how he manages to balance this with running a massive livestock farm. He also gave the crowd a sneak preview of his next book which he had only just completed earlier in the day.

Last night at #Motherwell Library, #AnneDonovan treated the crowd to a fantastic insight into her character development and teased them with readings from her fantastic new book 'Gone are the Leaves'. It was a great night in which revealed her love for Scottish words from the past and I think everyone who attended would agree there had been at least a little 'madderam' on the night.

Encounters 2014 - Week 2

Week 2 of ‪#‎Encounters2014‬ is about to begin and there is another packed week of activities to you to get involved with. There is an introduction to ‪#‎breakdancing‬ for kids at ‪#‎Airdrie‬ Town Hall today at 4pm and 5.15pm (https://www.facebook.com/events/510904169009232),‪#‎JamesOswald‬ will be at ‪#‎Coatbridge‬ Library talking about his latest books at 7pm tomorrow (https://www.facebook.com/events/598796400238745). Encounters 2014 Countdown: 1 day to go - Doug Johnstone

With 1 day to go until Encounters 2014 starts, we are announcing the visit of author Doug Johnstone to Coatbridge Library.

In the crowded genre of Scottish Crime Fiction, it can be diffi cult to get noticed among heavyweights such as Ian Rankin, William McIlvanney and Christopher Brookmyre. With the release of his sixth novel ‘The Dead Beat’, Doug Johnstone is not only doing just that, but has been receiving praise from these same highly successful Scottish writers throughout his writing career. Encounters 2014 Countdown: 9 days to go - William McGuire

With 9 days to go until Encounters 2014 starts, we are announcing the visit of William McGuire to Coatbridge Library.

Former professional footballer William McGuire is well known to North Lanarkshire audiences, following his hugely successful career playing for clubs such as Airdrieonians, Partick Thistle and Falkirk amongst others. Upon hanging up his boots, Willie pursued another childhood dream and became the popularly-acclaimed author of the smash-hit mystery thriller ‘Missing’. ‘Missing’ sees a couple’s dream holiday turning into a living nightmare, when they realise they each know absolutely nothing about the other. David Telfer takes his ex-model wife Louise on a Mediterranean cruise to celebrate her recovery from illness, but as they sail across the high seas he begins to have serious doubts about her state of mind. He suspects, from her erratic behaviour, that she is hiding something from him, and believes that she may well also be harbouring some dark secret. David’s suspicions are heightened further when they reach the beautiful city of Barcelona and his nightmare really begins… Join us to hear how Willie successfully swapped the pitch for the pen, and how ‘Missing’ made it from pipe dream to page.

Encounters 2014 Countdown: 15 days to go - James Oswald

With 15 days to go until Encounters 2014 starts, we are announcing the visit of author James Oswald to Coatbridge Library

James Oswald is the author of the Detective Inspector McLean series of crime novels comprising of ‘Natural Causes’, ‘The Book of Souls’, ‘The Hangman’s Song’, and ‘Dead Men’s Bones’. Set in an Edinburgh not so different to the one we know, Detective Inspector McLean is the policeman who can see beneath the surface of ordinary criminal life to the dark, menacing evil that lies beneath. James has also written an epic fantasy series, ‘The Ballad of St Benfro’, the first of which,’Dreamwalker’, will be published by Penguin in 2014. When he’s not tied to his writing desk, James runs a 350 acre livestock farm in North East Fife, where he raises pedigree Highland Cattle and New Zealand Romney Sheep.
