ooo you’re studying asl? any good tips/refs?
yeah!! it’s something I’ve wanted to do for like a decade and now I’m finally doing it
obvious disclaimer: I’m clearly not an authority on any of this, I’m just a relatively new student
so taking a class in person is always gonna be better than studying online-- if possible, check to see if there’s a club near you, or if your local community college has classes! there are a lot of things grammar-wise that a person can explain to you better than a website, or answering really specific questions, or tweaking your hand shapes, etc. I didn’t put off learning asl specifically because I was looking for an in-person class I could take, but the stars sort of aligned and people at my school decided they wanted to start a club, so they did. I know that that’s not always feasible, but luckily there are a whole bunch of asl resources online. there are two that the people at my school really recommend but I can only remember one of them right now slkhglkgd I beliebe it’s called signing savvy? I’m not sure how great they are with grammar but if I recall correctly they’re a pretty good dictionary. signschool.com is pretty good in that after they show you a sign they turn on your webcam so you can watch yourself do it but I can’t really vouch for how accurate it is bc I’ve only used it like twice glshdslkg
do not go buy a big book of signs from barnes and noble. you cannot learn asl from pictures in a book-- aside from motion being a big part of sign that’s really difficult to convey in print, most of them are horribly outdated, bc asl (and most other sign languages!) is constantly evolving
if you can or want to, you could try to find some Deaf meetups around you (like at a coffee shop or something). I’m sure if you show up and are polite and respectful people will be eager to help you learn. like all languages, the best way (and the scariest way, imo sgdlkgh) to learn is to interact with Deaf/deaf/hoh people, and don’t be afraid to mess up!
