I said “That new one looks as though it might be pretty good.” But she retorted “First of all it takes a better story than that “special snowflake” re- recycled young adult type shit,” the rain tap-tapped like typists’ strokes. “See that’s our biggest problem: we’re content to watch the same old stories ‘til we croak; we think there’s nothing left we can invent.” Her words flashed like an indie title card, on screen to try and win some big award.

She said “Imagine if you were a book— a classic, one to last through all the ages— you don’t want some Hollywood type crook to take a dump and wipe with all your pages.” I said “That’s the thing with stories, though. The goal, I think, is that you tell a tale that’s nearly perfect—magic, even—so that no interpretation of it fails to show the beauty or the pain inside this world that you created with your words.” She stared at me a while. “That is,” she sighed, “the dumbest thing I think I’ve ever heard.” Her eyes rolled slow like credits as she stood. I’ve read her book: the movie’s even good.
