Historians will say that they're best friends....
Cupcake ventured out to see Coco, not even realizing what day it was had it not been for running into Smol and Sprinkles getting all dressed up for it. “I hope Coco likes my dress.” They blushed wearing a red dress covered in heart designs.
Coco never thought much of this holiday considering their parents' situation, truthfully they’d have rather pretended it didn’t exist, Cupcake wearing a red dress covered in hearts was a pretty stark reminder. “You look ridiculous.”
“You don’t like it?” Cupcake asked embarrassed now.
“Sorry, that was rude.” Coco realized how blunt they sounded just now. “I mean you look ridiculous in a good way. Like you’re trying too hard for some dress up party.”
Cupcake laughed a bit in response. “I agree, my parents weren’t very useful in trying to figure out what an appropriate outfit was for this occasion. Mom even wondered why I even wanted to dress up at all, I think she’s starting to wonder about us.”
“Wonder what about us?”
Cupcake turned red realizing the implications of what they said. “Nothing!”
“You’re being weird again.”
“Sorry.” The child apologized and hid their face behind their scarf.
There was a bit of silence before Coco broke it again with a heartfelt message. “Thanks for hanging out with me today, it’s a weird day for me.”
Cupcake was surprised by such a serious tone, they lowered their scarf from their face again. “Yeah same. It's the only day of the year my parents say they love each other, and only really as friends wishing each other a Happy Valentine’s.”
“My parents don’t even love each other as friends, much less as Valentine’s.” Coco said. They looked over at Cupcake and started to reach to touch their face, but stopped and brought their hand back to their side. “Let’s just be like this for every day, no days where we pretend to more or less because some old person did something special a long time ago and made it a holiday.”
“A pair of awkward teens in non traditional family situations trying not to project or mimic our parents’ relationships into our own?”
“I was going to say like each other’s company all the time, but weird all the time probably suits us better.”
“Hey we’re not weird all the time I don’t think.” Cupcake laughed. “We could be normal if we wanted.”
“If we wanted.”
“Yeah, I mean how hard could it be?”
“Like if we really wanted we could do it right now.” Coco said.
“Yeah exactly. It being *that* day one of us would simply initiate a back and forth of compliments, like me saying your hair is nice today.”
“And I’d say your dress makes you stand out in a positive way, being as pretty on you as it is.”
“Then one of us would start to initiate close contact with a small touch.” Cupcake said moving their hand to Coco’s.
“Which would be a signal to the other it’s okay to lean in closer to each other.” Coco said leaning in close to Cupcake’s face. They looked into each other’s eyes and wondered if the other was really going to bring their faces together for a ki-
“LOOK AT ALL THIS CHOCOLATE!” Coco yelled loudly, jumping into Coco’s lap and causing the pair to snap back into reality. “That’s a very pretty dress, Cupcake.” The small hyperactive child complimented Cupcake’s look.
They had both forgotten they were waiting for Coco this whole time to get out of School, the child holding a bag of Valentine’s candy kids were passing out to each other during the School day.
“Did I interrupt something?” Coco asked noticing the silence and awkwardness.
“Nope, just us waiting for you to share some candy.” Cupcake said with a smile grabbing a heart shaped candy from the bag.
“I guess since Coco’s sharing chocolate with us that makes them our Valentine for today.” Coco said happily taking a chocolate from Coco’s bag of sweets.
“I agree.” Cupcake said with another big smile.
“Yay!” The younger Coco cheered. “I have two Valentines for Valentine’s Day.”
The three then spent the rest of the day together eating candy and watching Valentine’s Day episodes of their favorite cartoons.
