Unnamed! (First 800 ish words)
Nini traveled across the crystalline sands, countless fine, white granules crunching beneath her shoes. The ocean’s tide was at its highest, the salted breeze casting plumes through her curls. The waves lapped and foamed at the pale surface they cast upon, shifting the grains in a tumbling fight for dominance. High above, the new moon’s trailing stars cast a mute glow upon her path, aimless travel through the expansive beaches of the secluded coast.
It was a lonely night, the kind that made her pause just a time too many. She stood at the water’s edge, staring at the endless seas that spanned an unknown globe. Nini had never left the country, never traveled far past her little seaside town. In her life, she’d left for a vacation to something greater a total of three times. Thrice, she’d visited the nearby major cities. Thrice, she’d hesitated when the train arrived to take her back home.
She liked it here, of course. She was needed here. The old man who ran the vintage mall came to her tailor’s shop every few days, asking for mends and zipper replacements. The bookstore counted on her to meet their quarterly sales quota, using those books and stories to immerse herself in a world other than the one she lived in. To bring her out of town.
She was one of two people who worked at the tailor’s. The other, her mentor, an older woman who’d adopted the name Athena when she moved back after decades of self-discovery in another city. Nini recalled seeing her around when she was a young child, unable to remember who she may have been before. It didn’t matter. Now, she was Athena, a woman of wisdom and perseverance.
Nini couldn’t pretend she didn’t think the whole thing was a little silly. That was the way her life was. Nobody would ever return after they left, and if they did, it was something so noiselessly grand. The murmurs, spoken into emptying coffee cups, swallowed on plates beside muffins and other café foods. Nothing ever happened around here, so when it did, it would erupt as quietly as the populous could manage. From an early age, Nini learned to keep her mouth shut, to avoid allowing her name to fall into the mouths of the women at Sunday brunch, the sticky diner a confession booth.
The beach was home. Lonesome, vast, barren beaches void of life, broken only by the occasional sea snail. It was her world to travel across, to think, to finally breathe. Being by the sea was like exhaling a sigh she didn’t know she was holding. She turned to face the crashing waves, the aerated brine misting her evening-cooled skin, speckling her loose gauzy linen clothes.
She wasn’t intending on getting in. The cover-up material was simply for the weather, weightless layers to float across the night winds. Still, in a beach so secluded, it wouldn’t have been out of the question for her to slip off the white overshirt, the matching pants. It wouldn’t have been a topic of discussion if she allowed the waves of inky vastness to wash over her skin, her garments beneath a fine substitute for swimwear. She would go unnoticed. Just as she preferred.
She stood at the water’s edge, truly assessing the legitimacy of the claim. To her right, a stretch of sand, capped by a grand stack of stone, sturdy and silvery. To her left, far in the distance, was the first house on the water, distant from its neighbors that stretched past Nini’s view.
She knew that house. It belonged to none other than Athena. In another scenario, at another hour, she would have shaken the notion from her head. Her boss, catching a glimpse of a solitary escapade into the water? It wasn’t illegal, but it was certainly unusual. Questions would be asked, paving grounds for rumors to spread. The last thing Nini needed was another rumor about her family.
Tonight, though? She paused. The new moon was high above, its darkened shadow signaling an arc far past midnight. One o’clock, two, maybe. Athena was fast asleep by ten most nights. Her hesitation wasn’t unusual, but it was certainly unneeded. The evening was hers. The water was free to enter.
Still, she stood just a moment more. The cool salt in her lungs, the gentle light of the stars casting a hazy glow on her pale sleeves. The night was peaceful. It was perfect. Alone at last, finally able to think. She had all the time in the world to wander, to let the waves lap at her ankles, to let their pull submerge her into their brine. The cool sands beneath her sandals were fine, beautifully shifting as if tumbling through an hourglass.
She didn't know it then, but there wasn’t much longer for them to fall.
GLAM alliance but they’re vampire bats and it works about as well as it did in the episode
