Another morning, you found yourself looking for more food, but this time alone. Maybe you would be lucky to find a new magazine about babies.Â
You took a deep breath exhaling sharply, you made your decision, you made your choice.Â
A simple can of tea, it wasnât food, but it was something. You shoved it in your bag.Â
Suddenly a loud bang echoed from downstairs. The sound made your eyes widen. A muffled noise made you put your ear out. Â
Zombies? No, they were making coherent words. Shit, did you trespass in someoneâs territory? You just needed some food for you and the baby.
The sound grew louder; they were climbing the stairs! Your heart drummed in your chest. They were getting closer.Â
âClear!â You heard, and you struggled to be quiet. You quickly found a locker sliding yourself inside it, closing the door as quietly as you could. The footsteps finally arrived in the room coming your way. You try to stay as still as possible.
You heard movement, a shift in the room. âOn the second floor,ââ the voice cut off when you heard the sound of shuffling then a zipper. Then your eyes widened.Â
Your backpack!
You managed to gather something for yourself, and now whoever this was had it. You finally found food, and now you lost it. You were going to starve! âNoâ you breathed out. Your eyes widened and you quickly covered your mouth. What fucking idiot!Â
Did they hear you?Â
There was just silence. Maybe they had left while you were deep in your thoughts. The silence stretched. Maybe now you couldâ
The door ripped open, you yelped, pulling your knees closer to your chest, but no use. You were pulled by your collar, yanked out of your hiding place. Stumbling to the floor. You heard the click of a gun. âWait, wait, waitâ you called out, raising your hand in surrender.Â
Your eyes were squeezed shut, while another hand subconsciously shielded your stomach. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry, I didnât know it was someoneâs spot,â you cried. âI didnât mean to steal, Iâll just leave okay, keep the bag?â You stammer, your bladder was almost threatening to make you piss yourself.
When there was no response you opened your eyes to meet brown ones. They seemed as surprised as you.Â
He dropped to one knee, pulling your hoodie back, revealing your face. His eyes were showing a mix of emotion as they roamed around your face.
âYou'reâŠa survivor,â his voice cracked a bit as he cupped your face feeling your warmth, making sure you were real, âThank goodness,â he breathed out.
His eyes turned to the side, he seemed to be listening to something in his earpiece. You have time to evaluate your situation. He was wearing a vest with the British flag on the center, was he in the British army? But underneath he was wearing a blue dress shirt and jeans. Not very militaryâŠ
Maybe he just robbed a dead soldier.Â
He clicked the radio on his chest
â2nd floor, I found something, Sir!â He called, standing up, eyes not leaving you.Â
âGaz!â You suddenly heard, his head momentarily looked away from you. To the door, then back at you.
âSecond door, left!â He answered. Not long after someone barged through the room.Â
âYer aâright ?â He asked him and the first man jerked his head towards you on the floor. The other head turned to you.Â
Two other men walked in analysing the scene. They were all in military gear and heavily armed. One with a fishermanâs hat, the other with a ski mask.Â
They all looked not only surprised but a bit dazed, like they were seeing a ghost.Â
âChristâŠâ one of them walked towards you, you shifted back slightly, he stopped. âWere arât gonna hurt ye,â he said.Â
âWhat happened back there?â The masked one asked.Â
You were not sure what he was talking about. âI found this place, I was just looking for food,â
âYou were alone?â He asked, you nodded standing up. âMy group left meâŠâ you paused. Contemplating you were alone, these people seemed fed and somewhat clean. They must have a group too. You canât tell them the reason, you were alone. You would lose your last chance. Before it was too big to hide under layers of clothes. âI found food, Iâm willing to share, if you take me in, I can be quite useful.âÂ
âTheyâŠleft you?â Gaz asked, perplexed. You nodded.Â
There was a slight moment when they debated with their eyes. The two hopeful men suddenly looked defeated again.
âWhat's wrong with you?â The one with the hat asked, his voice was full of suspicion. You raised your shoulder, shaking your head.Â
âNothing's wrong with me,â you answered,Â
âYouâre better off not lying to me, loveâ he warned, âAre you bit?â
âWhat? No! I swear, Iâm not!â Your eyes darted around the room.
âItâs summer, and you have quite a few layers on .â He said,Â
âI-I get cold easilyâ you lied, he sighed.
âTake them off,â he asked, your eyes widened, you took a step back.Â
âI donât understandâ
âStrip,â the masked man said, raising his gun. You raised your hand in surrender.Â
âSorry about this love but I will need to check your body,â Gaz said.Â
Your eyes darted to all the men. If you removed your clothes they would see your baby bump. It just started to grow and be noticeable. âB-but, I have no bites, I promiseâÂ
He shook his head. âSorry love, can't take your word for it, if you have nothing to hide then it should be easy, yeah?âÂ
âYou want to be taken in, thatâs the requirement,â you sniffle looking around once more. You nodded, two of them turned around. While the masked man remained put hand secured on his gun.Â
You removed your jacket and shoes. âShirt and pants tooâ he ordered. You removed the rest standing with only your underwear, holding your side. It was easy to hide underclothes with a newly growing belly, with layers but now you were fully exposed. Your heart palpitated from their scrutiny.
Gaz took no time and stepped closer and removed the hand that was covering your chest, turning your arm around delicately, but hastily. His hand gliding over you, he turned you around and continued his search. You hadnât been touched in a while, your hormones were acting up. Feeling goosebumps, shivering under his touch. If he noticed he said nothing. After a thorough inspection, he smiled softly at you.Â
âNo bitesâ he said, helping you dress back up, only when you were fully dressed, did Gaz spoke again. âAll good,â he said and they turned back around,Â
âSorry, it was necessary,â The man said walking to you, you nodded.
âIâm John Priceâ he said Â
âYn YlnâÂ
The man besides you hesitated a bit, scratching the back of his neck.
âNot to be a knob but, are youâŠâ Gaz hesitated looking at the other âperhapsâŠpregnant?â he asked, clearing his throat. Your face drained, he noticed.Â
Your bottom lip trembled despite yourself. You seemed to cry a lot lately. âI promise it's not a problem-â you quickly said, they exchanged looks, you already thought it was over. Â
âHey, no, donât cry,â he quickly held your hand. âThatâs why they left.â
You heard a loud exhale, peeking over Kyleâs shoulder. The masked men had lowered his gun.
In no time you were sitting on a chair.Â
âHow far along are you,â John asked, you chew on your lips, glancing past his shoulder to the man with the masked man.Â
âDonât mind him, just look at me.â He said holding your chin guiding your eyes to him âAnswer my question.â
âFive monthsâŠIâplease donât hurt my babyâ you cried,
âShh, itâs okay. That's quite the predicament youâre in,â he said looking down at your small bump.
âWas the father in the group?â Kyle asked, frowning. You shook your head.Â
âNo, he was the chief leader of the first group I was inâŠHe said I wouldnât get my period, He promised heâd take care of me, Iâm was so stupid,â
âThe bastard, he abandoned you?âÂ
You nodded slowly, âI didnât want to get rid of my baby. Iâm stupid I know, but I donât have anything else just to me, they're my blessing,â you replied rubbing your bump, tears streaming down your face, âMy recent group found out and I got kicked out again, b-but Iâm not a problem I swear, I pull my weight.âÂ
The man in the room turned their attention to John, his arms crossed looking down at you, deep in his thought.
âThatâs two extra mouths to feed, she will have no mobility in a short while, the brat if it survives will cry. Too many liabilities, Sirâ the mask man said, shaking his head.
âPlease let me stay with you just a little while, I canât survive out thereâplease, I beg, you wonât even know Iâm here, a-and I know Iâm pregnantâŠbut I donât eat a lot and my baby will be quiet, Iâll make sure of it.â You continued to glance around pleading. âO-orâ you licked your dry lips, âI-Iâll leave as soon as they are born, I just need time to gather things, yesterday they didnât let me take anything with me.âÂ
âThe ones up in the abandoned school were the group?â John asked, concerned.
âY-You met them?âÂ
âSomething like that,â he hummed, rubbing his beard. âA blessing indeedâŠâ
âA baby cries if it needs to sleep, eat, it will cry if you don't change its nappies fast enough. What will you do if we have to run, you wonât be able to hide, or quiet it down.âÂ
âI-I find a solution, in time.â You replied your head low,
âThen raising a child takes resources, time, energy,â he continued.Â
âHow dâye plan on doinâ that alone?â Another asked.
âWe can manage a pregnant woman, canât we, Sir?â Gaz stated, your head shot up, looking at their faces. Were you hearing their tone correctly?
âI think so,â their captain said, nodding his head. âBut the pregnant lady, be in the house with you lots?âÂ
âYes!â You said quickly standing up âYes, Iâll be so quiet, Iâll behave.âÂ
âNo need for all that, for that love,â he said âYouâre under Kyleâs watch until we get home.â
âI found you, itâs only normal youâre under my care,â Kyle said smiling.Â
Suddenly you felt arms wrap around your form. You were trapped in an embrace. Obscuring your view.
âSorry lassâ the man hugging you said. âThe lads arn huggers and felt like ye and I needed itâÂ
âSoap get offâÂ
âItâs okayâŠâ you said, not able to hide your surprise, you hugged him back. You forgot when was the last time you had a real one.Â
âHell witâ tha bastard, weâ take care of yeâÂ
âThank you,âÂ
â-
They brought you along, you learned everyoneâs name, that they were ex military, that explained the outfits, and their code names.
Finally you saw the shape of a building on the horizon. Your eyes widen slightly.
âYou have a house?â You asked, âon the open?âÂ
âThe perimeter is secured and there are traps; those creatures can't walk through.âÂ
âYouâre not with the rest of the military?â
âWe're all thatâs left of our squad, there isn't much to protect than ourselves, now youâ Kyle said smiling.Â
Further back the two other men were watching closely.
Ghost turned to Price, his face was covered but his eyes were screaming, he was opposed to it and for good reasons.
âI know.â John said, sighing.
âIt's a bad idea, Sir,â Ghost voiced.
â I know,â he repeated âbut we haven't seen any sign of life for months now, she's the only survivor of her group , that baby saved her life,âÂ
He looked as Kyle and Johnny gathered around you asking you questions, smiling for the first time in a while.
âItâs a lot of constraint but itâs also hope, after all that happened, with Laswell and the others. They need itâ he said, looking at you as laughed at some absurd comment Johnny probably made again.Â
âGod knows, I do too,â he admitted looking back at the taller man, who remained silent.
âHey, Ghost you're going to love this!â Kyle beamed, closing the gap between them.
âYn, show him.âÂ
You perk up following close behind wanting to do good âyes!â You exclaimed. You unzipped your bag.Â
âI got tea, it's not much, the place was already ransacked when I got there,â you said, holding out the little tin can to the tall man.
You walked closer to him, your hand extended, a hopeful look all over your pretty face. He blinked slowly.Â
You chewed on your cheek, when he didnât respond, you swallowed, looking back, at the others. Didnât they say he liked it?
âYou hear that Simon,â Price smirked, glancing at Ghost rocking slightly. âShe got you tea,â he said.
Simon hummed, âAlready sucking up?â and muttered taking it from you. âsmart girl,â he added.
Your lips curled into a smile, and suddenly he felt that maybe it wasnât a bad idea.Â
You turned to the other two who were grinning at your beaming face.
âCome I'll show you where you can sleep!â Kyle said, taking your hand.Â
âYou can sleep in my bed, it's the most comfortable one,â Soap explained.Â
âN-no I can't impose like this, Iâll sleep on the floor.âÂ
âDon't worry about Johnny, he's house trained,â Simon said, following behind, John chuckled.Â
âMostly,â Kyle added, raising a shoulder.Â
âYâall can fuck off!âÂ
