Color Experiment
For my first experiment I decided to verify the emotions colors elicit from individuals. I asked 10 of my friends what they think/desire when shown a specific color ranging the light spectrum.
Starting with White: The expected emotion elicited from this would be calm, peace, or neutrality. And for the longest time the participants stared at the picture, I asked them were they feeling bored, but 8/10 of them responded that they want to sleep; which I suppose is pretty close to peace and neutrality.
Next color is Gray: Again most of the participants responded that they feel like they want to sleep, yet this time, 3 people responded that they feel unease and dread, saying that it reminds them of a nightmare.
The color Red: Here most people said that they desired tomato sauce, because the color reminded them of such. 4 people said that they feel like they want to buy their partners some flowers, which goes in line with the color psychology of red being a color of romance and passion.
The color Orange: Surprisingly, none of the surveyed said they desired to eat an orange, some of them said that it reminded them of the sunset, and hence made them want to go on a hike or an adventure. Others were apathetic and said that they feel nothing in particular.
The color Yellow: The response for this might be heavily inspired and influenced by their childhood, as most people responded that they want to start playing with legos. Whilst one person said that they wanted to buy some flower for themselves.
The color Green: Most of the participants responded that they wanted to go for a walk in a forest, which is to be expected as green is suppose to be a natural color, and most people relate nature with going for a walk.
The color Blue: Most people felt very calm, they also said that they want to go for a swim. Making them desire visiting a pool or the ocean. A friend who spends her time in a sailing club says she felt freedom and excitement as it reminds her of sailing on the ocean.
The color Purple: For some reason most people here said that purple made them want to watch movies. The reason they gave for this was that purple made them remember some popular culture characters like the Hulk.,
The Color Brown: Here there was a unanimous response for chocolate. Really self explanatory, but I guess chocolate could allude to comfort and friendship.
The color Pink: Here some people said that they want to have some candy, whilst others said that they could smell flowers.
Reflection: From this experiment, I gleamed that some of the feelings people feel from looking at certain colors is verified, but it was too broad and undefined, perhaps, focusing on just one color would be better. I wonder if there was a picture that utilizes one or maximum two colors to completely elicit all the responses that a person is supposed to feel? Also in this experiment, when asked what people feel when looking at a certain color, most people after they’ve answered the question will add that they WANT to do a specific thing or have a certain thing. An example of this would be looking at the color blue; after saying that they feel calm, most immediately added that they want to visit the beach and go for a swim. This kind of response has made me even more fascinated in delving even deeper, perhaps I’ll choose one color specifically and explore it on a deeper level.
