Coffee Grounds (Slug Repellent)
I love -gardening. I have always enjoyed the delicate grace of flowers and plants, and my Grandpa and Mum are keen botanists -my Grandpa used to teach me the latin names of plants, and the earliest memory of my Mum, she had a pair of secateurs. I’ve only started being serious about gardening in the past year and a half; and like evrything I am serious about, I fell head over heels into it. Into the hard labour of tilling, soil, digging holes, landscaping, into the meticulous work of sowing seeds and tending to seedlings, and watching them grow. Into the pure pride and sheer joy of seeing your garden blossom! I absolutely love gardening, all of it; and I love the lessons it teaches me.
I am less wary of insects now, and I observed bees hard at work in the pear tree for hours this Spring; and seeing the bountiful harvest that awaits us, I’m very excited!
The one real fiend of the gardener, I’ve found so far, is the slug. It may have a purpose in the circle of life; but I haven’t yet found it, and I can’t be reconciled with its annoying habit of munching on any tender leaf it finds, flowers and vegetables alike, and preventing their growth. I can’t be reconciled with it’s appearence either, which may be mean, but ooh, slugs are ugly and they do irk me so!
One has to get rid of them; but how? Well, if one is a coffee drinker, that’s the beggining of the (organic!) solution. Collect old Coffee Grounds from your coffee pot, coffee machine or filter -however you make it!- and sprinkle around the plant you want to save (or rescue) from slug attacks. You can also make a Coffee Grounds border around your vegetable beds and kitchen garden. Apparently, slugs despise the smell and taste of coffee, but also they can’t slide or glide (or whatever is the way they move) on Coffee Grounds! I’ve sprinkled a few around this Dahlia which had been subjected to slug greed, and it has recovered wonderfully and its new leaves are intact!
Happy gardening,friends!
