Woman in the Kitchen
Artist: Jean Brusselmans (Belgian, 1884-1953)
Date: 1935
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, Belgium
Description
Jean Brusselmans has transformed the intimate scene of a woman in the kitchen into a stylized composition of planes and lines. Through the austere forms and their intense simplification he has reduced all the elements of the painting to their essence. The bright touches of red and white add an element of freshness to the rather sombre surroundings in which Brusselmans painted his wife. Her attitude is one of resignation and her face expresses very little emotion. Around her we see the attributes of a simple life, objects which are often depicted in Brusselmans’ still-lifes. In his search for the right form the artist always found new inspiration in his everyday surroundings.

The Best Coffee Brewing Kettle to Upgrade Your Pour-Over Game
There are countless coffee makers available in the market for you to choose from. These range from simple pour-over brewers to fully automatic and programmable coffee machines. However, for someone with an aesthetic sense and affinity for novelty, a pour-over brewer that yields fresh aromatic coffee would always be the primary choice for brewing coffee.
Why the Pour-Over Brewer?
The pour-over method of brewing coffee has witnessed a new life recently; it has many advantages when compared to fully automatic and programmable coffee machines.
The first factor is the control that it allows over brewing; you can easily manipulate the basic coffee factors that contribute to the perfect tasting coffee. You can control the water temperature with the help of a thermometer. Some coffee kettles have a built-in thermometer to facilitate you.
The material of the kettle also plays an important role. A kettle constructed from stainless steel would not only keep the water hot for long but is also more strong and durable. With pod-type coffee makers, you do not have any control over the type of ground coffee as many of these restrict you to their brands. That limits you and doesn't leave room to try different types of coffee. With a pour-over coffee brewer, you can choose a variety of ground coffee and also use the amount you believe is suitable according to your taste. If you have a grinder and other coffee-making accessories, using a pour-over coffee brewer can become a real work of art and prove to be much more enjoyable. It would also give you plenty of room for experimentation.
Another important factor is the life of coffee machines compared to manual pour-over brewers. The former may look fancier but also has a relatively short life span. Electric circuits often go wrong and leakage is a common issue faced by users of coffee machines. In the case of manual brewers such issues are hardly experienced.
The price of coffee machines is also much higher than manual brewers. You can buy a high-quality manual brewer along with all its accessories at a price much lower than that of an ordinary coffee machine.
Many of the coffee machines use filters such as steel mesh filters or paper filters. Both can also be used with manual brewers and both have their own pros and cons. Using paper filters can be a hassle and they are much more likely to waste the true taste of ground coffee. So a steel mesh filter is a much better choice. It yields a richer brew and lets you enjoy the taste of essential oils in coffee. It is also easily washable and you do not have to replace it like paper filters.
Get the Right Tools
If you are all set to get your first pour-over brewing system or you believe it is time to upgrade your existing pour-over game to barista grade, then keep in mind the above mentioned factors. Remember that you need a good starter kit. If you prefer to do every step in coffee making yourself then we would recommend that your starter kit should include a good quality grinder, an ergonomically designed kettle, a high-quality carafe, a re-usable steel mesh filter, a precise measuring system and storage canisters for your coffee beans or ground coffee. That might sound like a long list if this is your first time with pour-over brewing. However, it would cost you way less than a coffee machine and very soon you would be telling people about what an expert coffee connoisseur you are!
Keep in mind that this one-time expense would go a long way and you may not even feel the need to purchase these tools again because of their durability and long life. You would also not have to deal with burnt electric circuits and hot water leakages which are common in the case of automatic coffee machines. That also means no more messy counters when brewing coffee.
