Today’s project: changing the lining in one of my coffin purses. Ta-da! Covered in clips to secure the edges as the glue sets.
Apparently when I'm stressed and tired, I obsessively search coffin purses. But I only want hard-sided ones that have hinges and latches, not the assorted "vegan leather" zip-up ones that are out there.
... no, I don't have enough coffin purses already, how dare you suggest such a thing.
Goth nostalgia + gothy DIY!
Behold, the weirdest and rarest coffin purse in my Stereotype Technology collection! Yes, it’s made from mirrored Lucite. Didn’t like the music the DJ was playing at the club? Show displeasure by angling this purse to reflect the fancy light effects right into their eyes!
I say this is the rarest one in my collection because I bought it over 20 years ago as a “custom” order from an Etsy seller who was in business for roughly three months. And it took them almost a year and a LOT of “What progress have you made on this? Please send me photos” messages.
But still. Mirrored Lucite!
Hi, so as far as I can see there was the company Undertakings making the original, metal coffin purses with the hammered cross and a fan-shaped decoration on the hinge, and this was in the early 90s. then in the mid-late 90s Alchemy made a similar design but in faux-leather with a velvet cross matching the lining, then Demonia and maybe a Hot Topic own-brand made imitations of that with a less detailed cross and fewer metallic details such as the fleur-de-lis motif on the Alchemy version.
You are exactly right! And because I am a Stereotype Technology fool, I have all of them *except* the Alchemy Gothic version. (Which is actually made of real leather, because Alchemy doesn’t mess around.)
At this point, the only vintage coffin purse that would tempt me into buying/bidding is the long-discontinued red leather Alchemy Gothic Prince of Wallachia coffin handbag. Other than that, my collection of coffin handbags is complete. I swear.
Just when you might need a project to distract you, there's a new tutorial post at Gothic Charm School! Red Velvet Lines the Black Box (featuring a vintage coffin purse)! https://gothic-charm-school.com/charm/?p=1477
Who makes that super deep, velvet lined coffin purse?! I've never seen anything like it, its great!!!
It was made by a company called Undertakings, back in the early 90s. Here’s an ad for them from Ghastly magazine:
I suspect that if some (reputable) company started making metal, velvet-lined coffin purses again, they’d get quite a few sales driven by eldergoth nostalgia alone.
It's time for another round of dithering over handbags!
While I have been delighted with my vintage box/train case purse I've been using lately, I have once again come to the grim realization that I really DO need to carry a purse with a shoulder strap. So now I need to decide if I'm going to switch back to one of my leather A-frame purses with the skeleton hand, or if I want to go ridiculously Olde Skool Goth and carry my black metal coffin that's lined with pink satin (and has a shoulder strap).
What I'm really craving is the Alchemy Gothic "Prince of Wallachia's Coffin Handbag", but my budget laughs derisively at such a notion.
