What is the difference between a cohesive gel implants and a gummy bear implant? Hi, this is Dr. Roy Kim in San Francisco. One of the more common questions I get is, “What is the difference between a ‘cohesive gel’ implant and a ‘gummy bear’ implant?” In my right hand is “cohesive gel”. It’s silicone and you can see it’s smooth, it has a round shape, but it’s also relatively soft which may be hard to see or feel through the video. Next up is the “gummy bear” implant. This is silicone- it’s more firm. It has an anatomic or tear drop shape as well as the fact that it has a textured shell. That is the difference. They are slightly different and used for different purposes in breast augmentation surgery. Today’s silicone breast implants can’t leak or ooze. Here, I have cut a modern silicone breast implant, and despite squeezing it, the silicone inside the breast implant “sticks” to itself and will not run onto the blue towel. Inside your body, your silicone breast implants will behave the same way. Also, I can’t imagine any defect as big as an incision completely across the top envelope of a breast implant- most breast implants defects are only several millimeters big. So you can rest assured that your silicone breast implants are safe, and the filler material will not go anywhere.
