to me fingon and maedhros are actually quite similar people in the respect that they can “turn it on,” so to speak, with incredible speed and ease—charm is just another means of transforming a desired conclusion to a foregone one. they can make anyone feel listened to, special, uniquely understood and valued; everyone is in their confidence and everyone believes they’re the only one, favored and indispensable. and at the same time no one is entirely sure whether their smiles are genuine, and no one goes too long without doubting whether they really are as important to their lord or their companion or their colleague as they thought, or whether they’re saying cruel things about them whenever they leave the room. and everyone feels guilty for wondering it the next time they see them. how could they ever doubt someone so courteous and attentive?
