hello! hope you're doing well. any chance you could explain how you get this gif effect when you have a chance (https://www.tumblr.com/yenvengerberg/777202055053033472?source=share)? it looks so cool and I just can't figure it out. thank you so much!
hi! hope you're doing well too! so this was achieved using ripped paper brushes which are custom brushes that can be loaded into photoshop meaning you do need to have photoshop to achieve this as i'm not sure they're compatible with other programmes - these ones by tricorn design on deviantart are the ones i used. i then took these brushes and played around with painting them onto a new canvas to create a layout for the gifset where varying ripped papers overlay each other, which gave me an idea of what i generally wanted like this:
i then used each of these painted layers as a clipping mask for three 540x540px gifs (i have a tutorial on clipping masks here if you want more detail on that!) so it was just a case of splicing them up, assigning each one to a different painted ripped paper section, and then putting them together in one canvas to create the overall effect. in the gifset linked i used six painted brush layers, so this meant that one shot it would occupy two of the ripped paper sections, and i just alternated between them. i also manoeuvred the shots around a little within their clipping masks to ensure they lined up well, so for that i would recommend literally making six different clipping masked-gifs so you have some extra flexibility. then last step was to apply a ripped paper texture (i think i used this one) just under each gif so that it gave the effect of looking like the sections had been torn off.
i hope that makes sense! apologies for the lack of accompanying screenshots but i no longer have the psds for that set to refer back to. if you have any further questions please feel free to ask :)
