Paying homage to your childhood
Lloyd finds his old hoodie from season one and decides to remake it.
You’d think the famous ninja would be training themselves to death every day to protect Ninjago and even though they do, they, like anyone else wish for some relaxation. Unfortunately, their master seems to not care for such as every spring when crime is at it’s lowest, the ninja are ordered to clean the monastery from top to bottom.
Our green ninja, Lloyd was just peacefully cleaning the attic when he came across a large chest he didn’t recall seeing before. Usually it’s Kai that cleans the attic but this year he made a whole scene on how all the dust isn’t healthy for his hair or skin. Upon setting aside all the things on top of the large chest and cleaning the large layer of dust on it, the blond haired teen wondered if Kai had actually ever cleaned up here. Lloyd pulled the door to the chest open, and suddenly all words and thoughts had disappeared. Within the chest, laid his beloved black hoodie that he used to wear constantly when he was younger, the teen smoothed out the hoodie with his hand and caressed over the flaking white paint that depicted a ribcage. Suddenly, all his childhood memories came flooding back to him like him meeting the ninja for the first time which resulted in him being hung over a sign for trying to steal candy. Looking at the hoodie, Lloyd saw that the hood was stretched out from that encounter. Even though he certainly isn’t proud of the things he did as a child, he kind of missed that freedom. Back then no one cared who he was and he had no expectations that he had to live up to. Now was different however, now everyday was presenting himself from the best side possible as if he was an item being sold, no one even has to say anything, he already knows what people want and expect from him. As Lloyd was drowning in his loud thoughts, he was suddenly snapped awake from them by an idea, an idea to buy a black hoodie and paint it to look like his childhood hoodie. A smile began to pull on his lips, he still had a lot of work to do but to pay homage to his old carefree personality- he didn’t care at that moment. He could live with Wu’s lectures, he’s heard so many of them that they lost their effect a long time ago. Grabbing his green hoodie and some cash he had saved up for FSM knows what, he slid down the ladder leading to the attic and glided towards the door leading out of the monastery. Jay who was cleaning the living room saw as a head of blond zoom past the doorframe and he peeked his head out “Lloyd! Where are you going?”
“I need to get something quickly!” Replied the blond teen whose silhouette grew smaller with every passing second. The freckled ninja wanted to ask for Lloyd to pick something up for him but he was long gone by that time.
Lloyd doesn’t go out buying clothes often, mainly because people always want to take pictures with him and, even though he should’ve gotten used to it a long time ago, he still doesn’t enjoy seeing pictures of himself on the internet. Now however Lloyd was faced with the issue of which clothing store would sell blank black hoodies, nowadays every piece of clothing has some sort of logo printed on it. Lloyd wished he could avoid doing this but he came up to a group of girls around his age that were carrying clothing brand bags with them and gently tapped one of them on the shoulder.
“I’m sorry to bother all of you but-“ That’s when the green ninja saw the star-struck look in all of their eyes, and he regretted everything. But none the less he continued “I’m looking for a blank black hoodie, do you know where I could find one?” The group of girls needed a second to compose themselves but they replied and pointed at three neighbouring clothing stores that were bound to have some black hoodies in them. Lloyd thanked the girls and made his way to the three buildings. Minutes had passed and all Lloyd could find was black hoodies with brand names on them, he had already looked through the previous two stores and in the third one there was also no luck for him. It was at that moment that a collection of black leather jackets caught his eye. He made his way to the jackets and glanced through them. The blond was relieved as this was a much easier choice especially as a black half cut jacket had immediately caught his eye. From that point on, Lloyd’s mission was a lot easier, he had bought the jacket and all that was left now was acrylic paints and metallic markers that aren’t hard to find. The smile returned to Lloyd’s face as his former idea, that had quickly transformed into a dream, had become even more possible than before. While on his way back to his motorcycle, Lloyd spotted the three girls that had helped him before and thought that it would be common courtesy to thank them, so as he did before he came up to them and thanked them only to walk away and leave the girls star-struck once more.
Back at the monastery, Lloyd had returned to his room with white paint and markers sprawled out across his floor with the jacket being in the main centre of attention. The blond teen tied his hair into a loose man-bun and sat down cross-legged next to the jacket and proceeded to sketch out with a pencil the ribcage which would be separated by the jackets zipper. Lloyd then remembered he had only once done any sort of arts and crafts and that was when painting his original hoodie, the blond sighed sadly knowing he never had the peaceful and full of wonder childhood other people had. Instead, he indirectly caused the death of tens of people, which bit him in the ass down the line, and had to fight his father who was possessed by the physical manifestation of chaos. As Lloyd prepared the white metallic marker in his hand by shaking it and popping the lid off with his teeth, he continuously drowned in his questions.
‘Why him?’ ‘Why couldn’t someone else be the green ninja?’ ‘Who would I be if I wasn’t the green ninja?’ ‘Would that version of me even like this me?’ ‘Would they be disgusted by who I am?’ ‘Would they be happier?’ ‘Would their relationship with their father be better?’
Unfortunately, he would never know the answers to these questions, and he knew it was pointless to ask himself of the impossible. Plus, a part of him believed that no matter how many alternative versions of him would exist- he would never escape the curse yet blessing of being the green ninja. Lloyd pulled himself back to reality with the outline of the ribs being done, he took the white paint and scooped a part of it on the lightly wet paintbrush and began to paint within the outline. The blond teen wondered if to return to his abyss of thought but decided against it as it would only ruin his mood even more. Afterall, he’s doing this to feel happy, not to drown in his depressive thoughts. Slowly and carefully, he pulled the paintbrush across the leather, spreading the white paint across it while humming a familiar tune. After finishing all the ribs and leaning back on his hands to view the jacket from all angles, all that was left was for the paint to dry. Sitting in his spinning chair, staring at the jacket as if it was going to make it dry faster, Lloyd put his headphones on and listened to some music. 30 minutes had passed and Lloyd was now laying on the floor, cheek to floorboard, gently tapping the paint. Upon seeing it had dried, he suddenly jumped up and pulled the jacket off the floor and rushed to the nearest mirror. Suddenly bursting into Kai’s room, Kai who was peacefully laying on his bed had dropped his phone on his face.
“Dude!? You could’ve at least knocked!” Shouted the spiky haired and hot-headed ninja.
“Sorry! I’m just excited!” said the blond while putting the jacket on and proudly standing in front of the mirror.
“Is that what you went to buy today? Did you paint it?” Kai asked side-eying his younger brother.
“Yes, to both of those questions” Replied his younger brother eagerly. Lloyd wasn’t sure why this brought him so much joy, was it the fact he made it? Or that it is similar to his childhood hoodie? He tried not to think about it for too long, all he knew is that he felt somewhat complete and perhaps less lonely with it on. Maybe that’s why he wore it so much as a child.
But no matter how much comfort the jacket brought him, it wasn’t enough to save him from Wu’s lecture.
