"Spirit was an old beast, one considered ornery by most if not all who met them. A dragon who had been riderless for at least half a century and notably, they seemed far from willing to take up any new riders. Deemed 'unclaimable' by many, the dragon was left to its own devices up until more recent years...

The ghost of the catacombs had bent the neck, not to any knight or king but to the young 'prince' of the kingdom. Dream, who had entered the catacombs against the will of his family in hopes of claiming a dragon - any dragon, so that he could earn their respect. So that he might be respected by them.

It's unknown why Spirit bowed to him of all people, but who can presume to know the heart of a dragon? And regardless they did, and a riders' bond is not something severed easily so there's no undoing what the 'prince' had done.

So now the great beasts roosts beneath a new castle, having come with Dream when he was married off to another king as a technical bargain by his family. Spirit has become infamous at this point to those in the castle, the great dragon who slumbers in the shadows, a beast beneath the boards who has torn cities and towns asunder. A creature who is all but tolerant to man, unless it happens to be their rider.

Though the dragon's intolerance for others is rightfully so, the bond between a rider and their dragon runs deep - Spirit feels Dream's pain, his distress, his anger... The dragon knows that their rider is not safe within the castle's walls and every day their own ire grows. A wish to burn the land and to protect the human who they've bonded with... But alas with Dream in the castle, their ability to do anything against those who've harmed him - those who continue to harm him - is limited at best.

So for now they lie and wait, appreciating the bits of time they have with their rider and the occasional flights they get to have when they happen. After all there's not much else they can do..."

Oh also important lore note for some context since it's not that explained with my blurb and is just kinda subtext - Dream is trans (ftm) in this AU, and unfortunately that is rarely respected so there's a good bit of transphobia/general disregard for his identity most of the time. Actually, it might just be when he's with Sam that he's respected now that I think about it-

Seven years.

That’s how long it had been since Perseus Jackson had left Camp Half-Blood. How long it had been since Perseus Jackson left with Luke. How long it had been since Perseus Jackson and Grover Underwood had had a normal talk.

And yet, somehow, some way, they had started a conversation as if nothing had happened. A traitor, and the satyr who was supposed to protect him.

“Wait, wait, so you’re four years younger than me right now.”

Grover laughed, a small bleating sound.

“Yeah. I age half as fast as you, remember? Seven years for you is three and a half for me. So here you are, nineteen years old, an actual adult, and I’m still a kid.”

“Does time seem slower or something? I’d think it does.”

“No, not really? It’s hard to explain, really. Maybe a bit faster if anything.”

Percy gave a small nod, tapping his fingers a bit - a familiar fidgeting, something he’d been doing since when Grover met him.

“But, still,” they continued. “Seven years. That’s still a long time.”

“Aw, did you miss me?” Percy teased, smiling a bit.

“I mean! Yeah! You were my best friend and, then you ran off for seven years. It stings a bit, man.”

“I did ask you to come with me.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know, but…” Their voice trailed off. This wasn’t where they wanted the conversation to go.

“What? You’re a protector. You bring kids to camp. You’ve seen how ignored this place is.”

“Your dad claimed you when you came to camp. Sure, not immediately, but pretty soon afterwards.”

“Yes, my dad. The one that didn’t help my family at all or try to reach out to me at all for twelve years.”

“He cared. You know it would’ve been dangerous.”

“A bit of danger is better than nothing!”

Grover took a deep breath, planning what they were about to say carefully.

“Percy. You were twelve when you went with Luke. You were impressionable. He manipulated you, when are you going to stop believing what he told you?”

“He didn’t manipulate me. I wasn’t forced to go. My father never reached out to me, never tried showing me that he cared.”

“And Luke took advantage of that.”

“He didn’t! He gave me options and I chose the right one!”

“You betrayed me!” Grover’s voice broke, tears welling up in their eyes. “You chose someone you’d just met that summer over your best friend? And you’re calling his option the right one?”

“It was the right one! The gods never cared for their kids! I chose the right option!”

He took a deep breath, turning away from Grover. “Believe what you want to believe. But I wasn’t manipulated.”

Grover took a breath, staying quiet for a minute.

“Okay. Fine. I’m sorry.”

And the two of them were silent.
