So a week ago I had to turn in an autobiography on why I chose to become a teacher for my intro to teacher education class. I checked my grade and not only did I get full credit, but my professor added a comment. She notified me that as a parent to a child with disabilities herself, she could tell that special education was something that my heart was in, and that for me it was "a calling and a gift."

It's the class that all collaborative (special) education majors in my school have to take the semester before they enter their program. Today was our first full class meeting. One of the instructors asked the class, "Who do you think is the most discriminated against group in this country?" The girl I'm working with on our learning styles project raised her hand. "Muslims," she said. "Yes, especially in this day and age. Since 2001. Really though, in this particular section of the country, anyone who is religiously different is discriminated against. What other groups can you think of?" She walked freely around the classroom but kept lingering at my desk. She stood next to my chair and looked down on me to ask the question in my direction more than once. At one point she outright pointed at me to single me out. "What about you? What group do you think is discriminated against? Who do you think of?" I knew the answer I wanted to give from my own personal experience but I was scared to say the words. I'm out at school but I'm not out in my program. I don't want to be discriminated against by my colleagues when I enter the workforce in a few years. But apparently she was one of the many people who could spot my condition from across a room without ever hearing me speak. I couldn't think of anything else that hadn't already been said so I told her what was apparently already stamped on my forehead. "Lgbt... individuals." "Yes," she said, seeming to be relieved that I really did broach the topic. "Lgbtq individuals. You guys know what the q is right? Questioning. I work as a school counselor and lgbtq individuals are the most actively mistreated group that there is. As far as high school students go, they're the most likely to threaten to or actually commit suicide. What other groups can you think of? " From that point on in class, anytime gays were discussed again she locked eyes with me. When she told the class stories about the school she's in now with 18 different lgbt students and how she sees more acceptance between those students and the general student body than she has with any differing groups before, she stopped walking around and stood at my table. When the group did an online poverty simulator, where you start the month homeless and jobless with $1,000 dollars and I was the only student who never factored children into my decisions, she gave me a nodding glance. When the simulator said that our mom needed $100 for critical medication and we had $300 but had just gotten fired, she was the only one who didn't say a word about my refusing to give my mom financial help. She doesn't even know my name, but she already understands too much about me, my life, and what I know my future will be.
