Can you explain college application system in the US? What should I do to get into college? I see a lot of information and since I'm foreign it's confusing. 😓 Btw, Have a nice day! Or evening. Or night 😊

I guess it really depends on where you’re from! In Sweden where I’m from the only thing that matters are your grades, but for college in the US you will need so many different things. Usually how they judge is 1/3 grades, 1/3 test scores (SATs or ACTs) and 1/3 everything else, which includes essays, letters of recommendation, extracurriculars etc. You should put an equal amount of effort into all three aspects of your application. Make sure to show them what you're passionate about as well as your intelligence. If you’re not from an English speaking country you will have to take the TOEFL test as well to show that your English is proficient. For me the application process seemed terribly daunting compared to in Sweden where you just send your grades to a few schools. My best tip is to make a plan for getting everything done, apply to a couple of different schools, and don’t give up! I never dared to hope that I would get accepted to my dream school, yet here I am!

Går första ring på humanistiska linjen med inrikting språk och är också väldigt intresserad av konst och litteratur. Eftersom jag måste välja mitt individuella val inför tvåan snart, så behöver jag veta vilka kurser som ger behörighet till vad och vad jag vill plugga senare, etc. Vet inte om det är tidigt att tänka på universitetet nu eller inte, men är inte så säker på att jag vill plugga mer matte än vad som finns med dom gemensamma ämnena, men eftersom det ger behörighet till så många *

* utbildningar så får jag inte välja bort det för mina föräldrar om jag inte är helt säker på vad jag vill plugga senare och att det inte kräver matte 2b. När började du fundera kring universitetet?

Vad kul att du är intresserad av konst och litteratur! Om du är intresserad av att plugga utomlands tycker jag inte alls att det är för tidigt att börja fundera nu. Ansökningarna tar så lång tid och det är väldigt mycket jobb så det är bra att sätta upp mål tidigt. Det gör också att en har en slags dröm att kämpa för. Jag började också fundera på universitet mitt första år på gymnasiet då jag hade varit på en tur på Harvard och Yale och var helt tagen av hur fantastiskt det verkade. Oroa dig inte så mycket för det, men börja tänka på vad du vill göra och kolla upp information om olika skolor och länder skulle jag säga. Jag gick natur på gymnasiet (lite av ett misstag) och läste upp till matte 5 vilket jag tror har underlättat för mig. Jag har en kompis som har haft lite problem med att söka till Storbritannien för att hon inte läst matte 3 trots att hon ville läsa litteratur så om du inte tycker att det är helt vedervärdigt och vill plugga i USA eller Storbritannien skulle jag ändå fundera på att fortsätta läsa matte. Det beror helt på hur hög ambitionsnivå du har och om du vill plugga något år utomlands eller en hel utbildning. Det kan vara lite jobbigt, men mitt tips är ändå att försöka kolla upp olika utbildningar och vad det är de faktiskt kräver och letar efter.

Just wondering.. Do you have any advice for international students applying to Harvard/other U.S. colleges?

I think the hardest part of being international for me was that I didn’t really have much support from my secondary school the same way that U.S. students would have had. If that is the case for you too it’s really important to keep track of everything you need to do yourself and make a list with deadlines and find out where you can take the SATs in time since not all countries have many time slots over the year to take them. Also make sure that you find out if the schools you’re interested in give scholarships to international students! Otherwise it all depends on where you’re from (if English isn’t your first language for example you have to show that you are a proficient English speaker/writer). They’re always looking for diversity so if you feel like being international has given you some unique experiences that is something you could possibly talk about in one of the essays.
