The Letterman Jacket

It all began in 1865 at Harvard University when the baseball team was given gray flannel jerseys with a large “H” sewn in the middle. The players who did not practice as hard or make the games had to forfeit their jerseys at the end of the season.

About ten years later the American Football Team started using the “H” on their jerseys as well. At first, only the captions had the honor of wearing the letter, but then it changed to whoever made key plays or played in important games.

The concept then transformed from a jersey to a jacket, with lettering embroidered on the heart or sleeve. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the wool and leather material started to be used to make the jackets.

Today, most athletes on high school and college teams are given such an iconic jacket after their first year of participation. Pins are awarded for each sequential year of participation and the last name is typically embroidered on the back.

Letterman jackets are seen as a status symbol honoring the dedication and success of the athlete wearing it.
