The Moriarty brothers, Sherlock Holmes canon and Sherlock Holmes fanon versions
The problem of the Jameses Moriarty
Namely, that there are two of them, the professor and the colonel.
What if they are half-brothers, both stubbornly named after their father? Suppose James Moriarty Sr. had a son with the first Mrs. Moriarty, named James after him, and for whatever reason(probably death) this first wife leaves the picture. The father remarries. The second wife also has a son and, maybe to try to replace her predecessor and pretend she never existed, also calls her boy James.
The older James is packed off to the army, but remains his father's favourite. He does well. Becomes a Colonel, eventually. The younger James is full of intellect and resentment - he is always compared, unfavourably, to his older brother. He gets all bitter and twisted, but achieves a professorship at one of the big universities(I forget if Doyle states which). Due to some misconduct or other, he leaves under a cloud.
Whether out of brotherly love(it's possible, people are complicated) or a more cynical desire to protect his name, Colonel-to-be James Moriarty gets ex-Professor James Moriarty a position coaching mathematics in the army. Then, for the same reason, he much later writes to the press to defend him posthumously.
I think that hangs together.
Nick has a bad relationship with his reflection, wasting sickness isn’t kind on his body and the liver fluid ‘belly’ is not flattering under his deformed ribs. But James is always there to remind him that doesn’t matter, and the mirror can go fuck a duck. <3
Nick is mine, James is @thetravelsofadreamer :D

How have you been, Miss Elliott? I hope everything has been well on your side.
Oh hello Sir! Yeah everything's great! I've just moved abroad and I'm having a lot of fun so far ^^ Work is challenging but interesting, and I an awesome roommate and a really good friend/colleague, and the town's very nice. Plus, Christmas is near and it just snowed! :D
How are you doing?
People generally assume ACD giving at least two of the Moriarty brothers the same first name was a mistake born from him giving zero fucks* about those stories but what if it was intentional? What if it was actual thoughtful characterisation, a way of very simply but effectively representing how much of an egotist their father was or a way to convey the deep rivalry that must have existed between the two (or more) brothers when they had to fight over their own name, or how much of an impact that may have had on their identity and sense of self when such an intrinsic part of themselves had to be shared and fought over?
Also the fact is it’s unusual for multiple siblings to have the same name in real life but it is not something that never happens. I’ve heard of a guy who gave every one of his children the same name as himself, even the girls (and I’m pretty sure he had like four or five kids too). Sometimes people really are that egotistical or eccentric.
Though I think it’s a great detail whatever its cause so really it’s fairly irrelevant why ACD did it. I think it’s fascinating to think of the conflict that must have arisen between Professor and Colonel Moriarty because both of them refused to give up their name and how much that conflict must have shaped both of them. (Also I do love the idea (no not because of Kim Newman) that the stationmaster brother was also called James.)
*yeah OK, given his near total lack of fucks about continuity and proof-reading elsewhere him just not giving a fuck about this either is the most likely scenario, but still...
You know
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone suggest that Professor Moriarty and Colonel Moriarty were twin brothers and it was the colonel that Holmes killed and the professor then used his brother’s identity to talk shit about Holmes but this seems like an idea that should be really common and in like a dozen pastiches.
I’m pretty sure Paul D. Gilbert used most of that idea but not that they were twins. Where is all the evil twin theorising?
