I just saw an article talking about how Antoine de Maximy (j'irai dormir chez vous) has been closely monitored by the algerian police during his broadcast in Algeria. I read many people comparing Algeria to North Korea since (and they take great care not to talk about the one who hosted him, Mr Daoud, and his great hospitality and the kindness of those he interacted with, but anyway)

I wonder why he was monitored though? Was it because it's a French show?

I haven’t read about it, but if it did happen it’s most likely because French journalists have been known to go to Algeria and stage fake bullshit in order to give a bad image of the country. (They do the same now in the French “ghetto” they stage fake crap in there to give a bad image of Black and Brown people.)

So now in Algeria it’s harder for French shows to get everything to be allowed to filmed. Cause they either don’t allow French shows to film in Algeria at all or for they accept but have the people monitored by the authorities.

Individuals who go there are not monitored there’s tons of videos of people (fellow Africans but also white French people and other tourists) who say that while they did see cops like they would in any other country if they spend an extended period of time there they are not restricted or followed. Even YouTubers (including French ones) who came with the explicit intention to film for travel blogs and all were not closely monitored.

So if he was indeed monitored by the police it’s about having bad experiences in the past with French shows.

In 2020 the network M6 sent people there without proper paperworks and they faked tons of stuff with hidden cameras and all. France is known to try and destabilize Algeria whenever the country is doing good/changing positively. So now Algeria is careful.

Also given Algeria’s past with France I personally think that being allowed to set foot there to film is already a huge concession from Algeria. Individuals being allowed to freely film and all is one thing I’m totally okay with same with local journalists and networks. Journalists and networks from friendly countries too. But from a country who is still teaching people that killing, torturing, raping, starving and stealing everything from Algerians wasn’t that bad? Yeah nope.

Though this was not mentioned, there is an IDF order of battle called the Hannibal Directive, which permits firing on IDF soldiers in battle, who are enemy captives. CNN published today a report repeating the "terrorists list at Al Rantisi Hospital" story, which turned out to be just a calendar with the days of the week in Arabic. CNN had previously admitted that foreign journalists accompanying the Israeli military should get permission from the Israeli forces before publishing their material.
