On Monday, I tried the Developing Layers and Colour Separation workshop and experimented with collage and risograph printing.

The workshop really solidified my idea of creating work based around adult play for the project, because as I was flicking through magazines I truly began to notice how much the media alludes to sex even in subtle ways despite the fact that it can still be quite a stigmatised topic that people aren't meant to talk about and have open discussions about.

I found the workshop very beneficial in my research for the project, and also had great fun throughout the process visualising the end product.

workshop: Colour Separation

I was looking forward to this workshop a lot ever since I saw what other people had done. I didn’t have much planning done beforehand so I looked through magazines and cut out images and phrases that i wanted to incorporate into my project. I wanted to create a surreal, dreamlike concept that displayed what a child’s imagination/imaginary world could look like. The process really helped me clear my thoughts with where I wanted to go with the theme of “play”. I had to use two seperate layers of paper to be able to have two different colours in the composition. It was difficult to choose what would be the main colour and what would be the highlight colour. If i were to do it again I would use less images and bigger images and try to focus on altering the colours of specific pictures rather than just sticking anything i like down.

Colour separations (made in preparation for risograph printing) lead to some neat accidental abstractions(ish).

I really love the mental acrobatics required for separating colours. I feel like it’s satisfying the same way math is (for people who don’t have a tumultuous relationship with numbers/equations)!
