Common Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus)

Large, bulky light gray bird with pale patch on neck, bright white wing band visible in flight, and a black-tipped tail. Most wood pigeons have white neck patches, but some birds located in Azores + Madeira, Portugal and much of western Asia have tan or “cinnamon” neck patches. Lives in woodland and semi-open areas, including gardens and towns. Common in most of Europe and much of Asia. The only known sighting in the Americas was a single wood pigeon observed in Quebec, Canada. Travels in flocks, especially in winter. Gives a five-syllable series of low coos: “hrruu-hooo-hoo-hoo-hoo”.
