Overlooked: Galaxy 5000
As far as racing games go there are a good number of different types. Some are simulators like Forza or Gran Turismo, some are arcade racers like Cruisin USA or Need for Speed. There are combat racers like Twisted Metal and Rock N Roll racing. Some are futuristic like F-Zero and Wipeout. One thing they all have in common is the spirit of racing. If you like the combat type of game then you may be interested in Galaxy 5000. It was originally released in 1991 for the NES and was the inspiration for Rock N Roll racing. Many of the mechanics in Rock N Roll racing started here, like the ability to upgrade your vehicle, racing on different planets, and even the general style of play. If you are familiar with Rock N Roll racing then you have a good idea of how Galaxy 5000 plays. It shares the same controls as many other NES racers. Steer with the d-pad jump and shoot with B and A. What sets Galaxy 5000 apart from the others is the venue and style of the races.
You travel between several planets and race against the AI with guns blazing. The ships you pilot can be traded in for better ships and each has a special weapon that can be picked up during the race. There are also cash prizes that can be picked up as well. Each time you advance to the next race on a planet the track stays the same but there are different obstacles and power ups placed around. After each race you can save your winnings or spend it to repair your ride. It can be a tricky balance as getting a new ride is always a good idea but damage carries over to the next race and getting blown up is game over. The soundtrack for the game is only decent and the shooting and explosions sound lame, even for the NES. When you bump another racer there is a spoken phrase that will play, that says “Hey!” or “Watch it!” or something of the like and is pretty clear for the NES. Although the speech in the game is not perfect, it was still pretty cool for an NES title, even one at the end of the NES life span.
The NES was not officially discontinued until 1995, but with the SNES releasing in the same year much of the attention that Galaxy 5000 may have received was overshadowed by the 16 bit hype train. That is a shame too, since Galaxy 5000 is a fun combat racer and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre and retro lovers.
