Shadows danced around the group as they sat in the dark in the apartment. The storm outside had caused their building and countless others to lose power. The group were sitting on the floor in Lotor and Allura’s living room, playing silly board games and having a grand old time.
The only thing missing, Lance realized, was Keith.
How could he not realize his boyfriend wasn’t there? He lives with him, for God’s sake. Lance got up, excusing himself by saying,
“I’m gonna find Keith. Be right back.” And he quickly started walking around Allura and Lotor’s large apartment. Shiro had moved in with Allura, seeing as she made the move of asking him to, and hey lived in Allura’s penthouse apartment, which had two floors.
Great, lance thought. More places for me to check for Keith.
Lance searched the ground floor with no luck, so he went to the Second floor to find his mullet-haired boyfriend. Lance saw a crack of lightning and heard thunder outside, followed by a short whimper-
Rain doesn’t whimper. Lance opened the closest door to him, which was Allura and Lotor’s guest bedroom. The room seemed normal, but as Lance closed the door, another crack of lightning was heard and seen, followed by yet another whimper, only a little louder. Lance slowly moved around the bed to find Keith curled up on himself in the corner of the room, his head in his knees being covered by his hands. Lance was stunned by the sight. The storm had started two hours ago. What happened to his boyfriend in that short amount of time?
“Hey, Hey. It’s okay, Keith, it’s okay. It’s me, Lance.” Lance said quietly, trying not to frighten his shaking boyfriend anymore than he clearly was. “Hey, what happened? Did you have another panic attack?” Keith shook his head and peeked up before another clap of thunder roared through their eardrums and lightning struck. Keith let out a yelp and buried his head into his knees again, bringing them closer to his chest. Lance gasped.
“Babe, are you... scared of thunder?” Keith nodded violently. Lance sighed sadly. Of course Keith was scared of Thunder; his father was shot in front of him and thunder sounded an awful lot like a gunshot.
“Oh, baby, I’m sorry.” Lance whispered. Another clap of thunder. Another whimper. Lance felt horrible for Keith; who knows how long he’s been cooped up here like this? Lance suddenly got an idea. His brother would have this really cool trick to do whenever the lights weren’t on or if Lance was scared during a thunder storm when he was younger.
“Okay, I’m going to be gone for a little bit, but I’ll be right back, okay?” Lance asked calmly. Keith nodded slowly and Lance sighed. Thank goodness. He got up and searched around. He found paper, books, his phone, and tape, along with a shit ton of pillows and blankets. He then ran down to his and Keith’s apartment to find a plastic candle light and his brother’s device. He came back to the room to find Keith curled up even more, now slightly rocking on his heels. Lance sighed sadly.
“Hey. I’m back. Okay, I want you to hold this for one sec. Can you do that?” Lance asked Keith. Keith poked his head out and shakily grabbed the fake candle. Lance smiled.
“Thank you. Now hold on.” Lance started setting up the blankets. Thankfully the space between the bed and the wall wasn’t that large, but large enough for what Lance had in mind. He taped some blankets to the wall and added weights to the bed to hold the blankets in place. He then draped a blanket on top of the sturdy ones and snuck back into the fort, more pillows and blankets in hand. He set them up so they covered the floor, making it much more comfortable. He then looked to Keith just as another clap of thunder was heard. This time, it almost sounded exactly like a gunshot. Lance’s eyes widened as Keith practically screamed, dropping the light and gripping his hair. Keith shut his eyes tight and buried his head into his knees. Lance quickly moved over to him, placing a hand on his arm comfortingly.
“Hey, Hey, hey. It’s okay, babe. You’re okay. Nothings gonna hurt you.” Lance said quietly, kissing Keith’s arm. Keith looked up, fear evident in the tears rolling down his face. Lance smiled.
“There’s the beautiful face I know and love. Now, come here.” Lance said, moving back so Keith could come to the center. Keith cautiously did so, allowing himself to unfold and crawl closer to Lance and the center. Lance smiled.
“Okay, now I know this is kinda corny, but it helped me a lot when I was younger.” He said as he set up the light and placed his brother’s device on top of it. It fit perfectly with the candle holder Lance had found. He smiled and spun the device, creating an illusion of lights around them. Keith stared in awe at the dazzling lights that coated the sheets, forgetting all about his fears. Lance smiled at him; Keith’s eyes were glowing in the light and he looked just as handsome as ever. Lance patted his lap and Keith looked at him in confusion for a moment before moving to sit on Lance’s lap. Lance smiled and hugged Keith closely, rubbing his hand up and down Keith’s back. Keith leaned into Lance’s chest and hugged him, burying his face into his shoulder. Suddenly another clap of thunder boomed. Keith yelled and clung onto Lance. Lance felt hot tears stain his shoulder while Keith started shaking. Lance rubbed Keith’s back and started whispering to him.
“Shhh. It’s okay, Keith. It’s okay. I’m here, you’re here. You’re not there. You’re with me. We’re in a pillow fort, in Allura’s apartment, watching some weird-ass machine that my brother made me when I was younger.” Lance muttered. Keith clung to him, his fists trembling as another clap of thunder was heard. Keith shrieked, all attempts of containment gone. Lance’s ear rang, but that didn’t matter. Right now keeping Keith calm was the only thing important to him. Keith’s breathing started picking up, and Lance was scared he was going into another panic attack. Keith buried his face farther into Lance’s shoulder and started sobbing. Lance felt his heart shatter as Keith’s tears stained his shirt.
“Shhhh. It’s okay, babe, it’s okay. I’m here, I’m here.” Lance said as Keith eased up a bit. Lance looked up at the lights and started humming a melody from a song he’d heard recently. The song was something like “A Million Dreams,” or something like that. But whatever it was, it was a really calming song. Keith let out a sigh and seemed to ease up as the storm let up. Keith eventually fell asleep on Lance’s shoulder from exhaustion and Lance smiled down at him. He pecked Keith’s head before giving the light another spin and watching the lights dance on the blankets, listening to the rain hitting the window outside the fort. Lance smiled one more time before going to sleep.
Shiro, Pidge, and Matt walked into Allura and Lotor’s guest bedroom the next day in search for the two. They’d been gone since last night and never came back after the storm ended, so there was an apartment-wide search party within the group to find them. Shiro heard soft snoring coming from behind the bed and taped up blankets on the walls, so he went over to investigate only to find some form of pillow fort attached to the bed and wall. Shiro lifted the blanket to find Keith sitting on Lance’s lap, both fast asleep. Shiro laughed quietly and Pidge went to say something, but Shiro placed a finger to his mouth. Pidge saw the couple, laughed, and took a few pictures before hurrying away. Shiro and Matt laughed under their breaths and exited the room, leaving the couple alone.
