Spring 2023 Expedition to Seattle
At the end of May and beginning of June, I took a trip up to Seattle to see family and friends. It was great to get back to the city where I grew up and see so many old sights and friends. It was also exciting to see how Seattle has changed too. The light rail continues to delight me as it makes it so much easier to get around the city provided you stay at a hotel near to a station. I was also…

FJB Comics and Games in Downtown Jersey City
Abstract:
Recent studies of cultural intermediaries demonstrate that economic activity in even the most rationalized organizations and industries is thoroughly cultural. However, they may not do justice to contexts where production and mediation are embedded in communities with distinctive traditions and aesthetic standards. This article offers an ethnographically informed account of intermediaries working within one such context: namely, the organizations and stores composing the ‘nerd-culture scene’ in a Canadian city. Retailers and group organizers enable geeky cultural practices by providing spaces where individuals can develop their interests and hobbies. Their labour is analysed in terms of their subcultural careers, gatekeeping functions within the scene and dispositions towards the ‘mainstream’. They are not simply economic agents but also culturally and socially situated actors motivated to do this work for its intrinsic rewards. Subcultural scenes cut across industrial sectors and cultural industries, making them a special context for the work of cultural intermediaries.
Level Up
It would never be the same, she realized. She felt her entire body quiver with anticipation. Everything about this relationship would be changed. And there could be no going back. She'd been waiting for this moment for so long, her body could barely contain the chills.
"Are you ready?" Sarah's husky voice was confident and direct.
Mel paused, letting her fears and excitement wash over her. Finally, "Yes. YES. Let's do it."
Sarah smiled. She turned away for a moment, and rifled through the papers at the desk. "Just fill this out and you'll have a hold shelf. You'll never miss another comic again."
Finally caught up!
It always amazes me how long it takes me to catch up on tumblr when I can't get on until the afternoon!
Spend the morning at a motorcycle show. It was sooo cool! (My dad's friend couldn't go so he gave him two VIP tickets!!) It was a blast! I drooled over so awesome bikes, bought an extremely nice biker jacket that is super warm, actually warmer than my proper winter coat! Which was good since when we got to the car we found out that the battery in the car alarm was dead and apparently our car does this weird thing where even if we use the key to open the door and put the keys in the ignition as long as the alarm is going off the car won't start.
Soooo we had to walk 8 blocks to Radio shack to buy a new battery. (Our alarm uses a very weird battery.) We were both praying they had it because we had no clue how we'd get home otherwise. Thankfully they did. We then got spiked hot cider with lunch (I also got a mimosa 'cuz I love them).
A stop at the comic bookstore and dessert before home. Overall a pretty great day!
(Oh and if anyone wants to see the photos of the bikes let me know and I'll post them!)
That awesome moment when a comic book store in Melbourne, Australia get voted the best in the world.
So happy
