The Metabarons comics Humanoids published in 2000 were a big deal to me. I was racing across the show floor at San Diego Comic Con, probably on my way to a portfolio review, when I was stopped in my tracks. Out the corner of my eye I saw maybe the first 5 issues on a table. As I flipped through them, a thought came into my mind like a whisper, “This is the comic you’ve been looking for!”

Akira #34 published by Epic (1995)
This was the first Akira issue I read. When I found it in 1996 I couldn’t believe my eyes. I knew and really liked the anime. I didn’t even know there was a comic. At that moment it was the only issue I could get. It was a really strange place to start. Who are these guys on the aircraft carrier? Why was Kaneda with Joker? What’s going on with the Colonel? Lady Miyako is a character who does stuff? It was clear to me that the story was much bigger than what was in the movie. I had no idea.
Finding every issue and filling in my collection bit by bit was the most exciting comics have ever been for me. Every issue blew my mind. It changed everything.

Another early love. I was 13 when this was coming out! I couldn’t have been a more perfect age. Bisley automatically achieved legend status with this art.
Marc Silvestri’s and Larry Hama’s run on Wolverine is what got me hooked on comics. Specifically issues 38-50.
Ghost Rider 1991 by Mark Texeira
When I first got into comics this was one of the comics I collected. Texeira’s Ghost Rider looked so cool.
Ghost in the Shell #4 published by Dark Horse Comics in 1995 was the first manga comic I ever bought. Masamune Shiro’s work had a huge impact on me. Looking at this issue, I still remember the excitement I had of trying something new and being blown away.
