Continuation of my search for an ace-spec adult romance that I like

My review: DNF (did not finish)

This is the second book in a series. I did not read the first book before picking up this one and it does not affect my review. The sexual scenes and embarrassingly blunt sexual language were a turn off but generally, everything else is fine. Brent is an accurately written demisexual and thinks a lot of the things that were also in my head when I was questioning. Feeling the need to skip the sexual scenes and discussion in a book giving ace-spec rep is annoying but the story is decent enough. A coming out story where the protagonist has to choose between the boy he loves and his homophobic family. The love interest is a gay Muslim (who must be featured on the cover since Brent is blond) so that’s neat. Not a majorly good story that I’ll think about after I stop reading but that’s rare for me and adult romance. DNF since I didn’t want to waste my time reading a book that low key pissed me off and had cringey dialogue when I am aware better books exist.

Now the purpose of me reading ace-spec romance is to hopefully encounter books more centered on the romance than on the erotica which can be difficult to find in the romance genre especially mlm. Unfortunately for this one, it had the 2 leads masturbate next to each other (and the demi-ace character says the other leads name) within the first chapter. It would have been so much better if Brent had suggested watching a documentary instead. Then it would have been funny and avoided the sexual scene. I’d prefer, when reading stories featuring ace-spec representation, for the author to be more careful about sexual scene placement. I’d rather those scenes wait until I’ve gotten to know the characters better and actually care about whether they get together or not. Having a sexual scene that could have been easily avoided within the first chapter really set me off. When it comes to ace-spec characters, slow burn is your best friend. This book does get fiercely sexual. Even though the characters are not having sex, they have over the top sexual thoughts and speak openly about their sexual wants in a way that leaves me with second hand embarrassment and makes me cringe. This is probably accurate to how people who experience sexual attraction feel and act but it’s alienating for me and hard to read. (For clarity: I am sex ambivalent asexual.)

me: Unrealistic. Not that many What Sexuality Are You quizzes even have the ace option let alone gray-ace. When I took what sexuality are you quizzes, I often got bisexual because they would ask me which celebrities I found attractive and there was no opt out option.
