Jess had regulars. Nyx Ulric was one of them, along with Tredd Furia. It was almost expected of them to get hurt on each and every mission they were sent out on, and Jess had somewhat begrudgingly gotten used to it.
Captain Drautos was another story entirely. Aside from routine physicals, Jess couldn’t recall a single time she had ever needed to run to the captain’s aid.
Until now, anyway.
Luche had dispatched her with as much calm as he could muster. There were undertones of absolute terror in his voice, however, and she knew it must’ve been serious.
She wasn’t expecting to see her captain all but on his deathbed when she arrived on scene.
“Good Gods, Luche, what happened?” she began tearing through her medical bag, grabbing a stethoscope and an oxygen mask in case it was needed.
His response was snappy and frightened, something akin to ‘just fix him first and ask questions later,’ so she obeyed without a moment to waste.
Drautos’ heartbeat was fast and weak, which was the worst possible thing it could be aside from silent. She listened intently for breath sounds on either side of his chest, and felt her stomach drop when the right side was almost completely silent. She peeled back his dressings to reveal a nasty gunshot wound in the lower part of his chest and cursed beneath her breath.
“Sir? Can you hear me?” she asked loudly, being sure to keep her words clear and concise. “Stay conscious, Captain. You’re gonna be alright.” His quick, shallow breaths were concerning, to say the least, but these were symptoms of a sucking chest wound. “Breathe. I’m gonna relieve the pressure in your chest so it’ll get easier.”
She was going to have to insert a hollow needle into his chest cavity in order to relieve the pressure on his collapsed lung, and use a chest seal over the wound to keep any extra air from getting inside. Hopefully that would stabilize him enough to get him moved back to the infirmary, with any luck.
