…Sorry. You look like someone else. Just… smaller.
Do you know my daddy? A lot of people say I kinda look like him. I don't think I do. I think Nana looks more like him. She has his spots and his spikes.
There were days Kirrahe hated working with scientists.
Usually those were the days when the yahg escaped. When the rubble had cleared and Shepard was on the move he was the one who had to round up their creation before it turned against them. Rentola was the only one crazy enough to volunteer to come with him. He slid into the bushes, narrowly avoiding the yahg trampling underfoot. His second-in-command was several yards back, shots glancing off its thick hide.
"Strong allies." Came the short response. Rentola twisted the top off a grenade with his teeth and lobbed it in the yahg's direction. That slowed it down.
"Like the krogan?"
Both of them knew it wasn't the most sound idea, but they weren't being paid for their ideas. "Major!" he heard Rentola cry. "Here, quick." He heard the yahg a few yards away. Kirrahe set up a decoy and scrambled away, crouching beside Rentola behind the cover of a tree. "I have an idea."
* * *
Rentola's idea was a long shot, but once they had found the equipment it had taken only minutes to set up. "You're becoming quite the strategist, Commander," Kirrahe said, smirking at him.
"I had to learn something from you between those speeches." As usual, he scoffed. A tangle of wires now dangled in the trees, only visible when the light hit it just so. The commander slid down from the trees, they decided he was likely more visible given Kirrahe's colour. It didn't take long for the yahg to sniff them out. The moment it sotted Rentola it charged, catching in the wires.
Beneath him he could hear the roots of the tree straining against the yahg. He sent a quick current through the wires. He could smell flesh burning, it only took a minute to stun the yahg. When Kirrahe looked down he saw a smile turn the corner of Rentola's lips, a moment of pride before he resumed his usual neutral expression.
The major pulled up his omni-tool, waiting for the main base to answer before speaking. "Yahg secure. We're going to need a little help bringing this one home."
Rentola was flattered he was even being considered for second-in-command. You wouldn't know it from how he reacted when he heard it from the lips of a low-ranked recruit, but he had worked hard. He deserved to bask. Right? Day after day of training, rising above the rest. Soldiers who had a better start than he did. And Captain Kirrahe appreciated that. Hopefully enough to grant him a promotion.
When the new report was issued he was one of the first to check.
He scrolled down the list, past dozens of names until he found his own. Operative Rentola. No Commander. He saw the name of another officer. Decorated, respected, but with half the field-work he had done. They'd see their mistakes when push came to shove and he didn't have the authority to do what he did best. He wanted to be angry about it, not disappointed.
It was more difficult to meet the Captain's eye after that. Yes, sir. No, sir. All masking a question that was posed at the tip of his tongue every time he saw those red eyes meet his. Why?
Violence was a cornerstone of their relationship. As was heavy gunfire.
But Kirrahe was always surprised when they found themselves backed into a tight situation. Rentola slid behind cover just in time to avoid a grenade lobbed in their direction. "Orders?" he called, flinching at the explosion.
"Hold the line here. I'll go attract their attention." Rentola nodded. Always followed orders, and had the decency not to sass him when they were working. Kirrahe placed his hand on the other salarian's shoulder, leaning in for a brief kiss on the lips.
He grinned at the wide-eyed expression Rentola gave him, one that quickly narrowed as his trademark scowl returned. "What was that for?"
"For luck, of course!" he called, diving into the fray.
