“I'm not going, Bradley.”
My best friend gasped like I'd kicked his favorite puppy. Sitting on one of the couches in the break room on base I leaned back giving him a stern look. “Why not?”
“Because of what happened last time and what happens neatly every time you and Hangman are in a room together. You two get into a tussle over something and I have to be the one to break it up.”
Bradley rebuttaled back, crossing his arms lazily over his chest. “That's not true.”
“You literally fought for two weeks about who had the better vehicle. And I'm sorry to tell you but if I had to choose I'd pick the truck.”
He scoffed. “You told me you loved the Bronco.”
“I love the one you drive. But I wouldn't pick it for me to drive. I grew up on ridin’ in trucks.”
Bradley lowered his gaze briefly before coming to join me on the couch. He draped an over my shoulder bringing me closer as he gave me a smile. “Come on, Y/n. We haven’t hung out in forever.”
“Well I’m sorry that my job of making sure you and everyone else in the Navy is paid is interfering with our hanging out time, Rooster.” Meeting his gaze I shook my head playfully. “But still no.”
He threw his hands up frustrated. “What can I do to get you to come? It’s a beach party and I know you love going to the beach in the evening before the sun sets so you can take sunset pictures.”
“You’re my best friend, you tell me, Bradley Bradshaw.” Laying on my back I put my keys across his lap, with my arms crossed behind my head sending him a cheeky smile waiting to hear what his answer would be.
He pursed his lips thinking for a moment before he looked down at me. “I’ll do my best to not argue with Hangman and…..I’ll buy you chilli cheese dogs at your favorite food truck.”
“You’ve got yourself a deal, Lieutenant mustache.” Giving him a military salute with my hand I got up editing the room but not before hearing Bradley chuckle at my nickname for him.
Unaware he’d waited until I was far enough down the hallway where he took out his phone and sent a text to a certain green eyed Texas Aviator - Y/n’s coming tonight.
A few hours later the beach party was in full swing with the Dagger Squad playing Dogfight football and beer pong. I had joined in on beer pong until I caught sight of a perfect sunset I couldn’t pass up. The sun was dropping low, turning the whole beach gold, and I slipped away from the noise. Bradley was right. I always ended up here, barefoot in the sand, chasing the last bit of light like it owed me something. I lifted my camera, adjusting the focus, when a voice came from just behind my shoulder.
“You’ve got a keeper there.”
A scream slipped out of my mouth and I lost my grip where I nearly dropped my camera, turning my head sharply seeing a guy standing behind me. “Ahhh!”
“Sorry, didn’t mean to sneak up on you. That’s a killer shot.” The strange guy had curly brown hair from what I could see with him being a few feet away, hands tucked into the pockets of his board shorts, expression warm and friendly.
“Oh,” I said, lowering the camera a little. “Thanks. The light’s perfect right now.”
He nodded toward the horizon. “You come out here a lot? You look like you know what you’re doing.”
“I mean….I try.” I laughed under my breath. “I’m not a pro or anything.”
“You could’ve fooled me.” He stepped closer enough to see the screen when I tilted the camera toward him. “Wow. That’s really good. You’ve got an eye for color.”
“Thanks. I just like catching moments before they disappear.”
“That’s a talent,” he said, and there was something genuine in his tone as he held out his hand. “I’m Mason, by the way.”
“Y/n.”
“Nice to meet you, Y/n.” He smiled, soft and easy while we shook hands. “So… what got you into photography?”
I shifted my weight, letting the waves roll over my toes as I answered. “My mom used to take pictures of everything. I guess it stuck. I like freezing things that feel… temporary.”
“That’s a cool way to put it. If you ever need a model, I'd volunteer. I promise I’m good at following directions.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
He grinned hearing a playful laugh come from my lips at his previous words. “I’m serious. You’ve got talent. And you look like you actually enjoy this.”
Mason stepped closer to me, opening his mouth to say something but he was cut off when someone ran past us and a hand shot past my shoulder so fast I barely registered it before my camera was gone.
“What the— Jake!” I spun around to see Jake Seresin standing a few feet away, my camera dangling from his hand like he’d just plucked a toy from a toddler. His grin was pure trouble, too sharp, smug, and entirely too pleased with himself.
“Careful, sweetheart,” he drawled, lifting the camera higher when I reached for it. “You’re gonna drop this thing letting strangers crowd you.”
“Jake. Give it back.”
“Nope.” He popped the “p” like he was enjoying himself way too much.
Mason blinked, clearly thrown. “Uh… I didn’t mean to-”
Jake didn’t even look at him. He just kept his eyes on me, that infuriating smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. Lunging in his direction he stepped back, raising the camera over his head like he was six‑foot‑something of pure, petty chaos. Swatting my hands I did my best to reach for it but he had longer arms than me. “Jake! Stop! Give it you’re going to drop it!”
“Relax,” he said, backing farther into the sand. “I’ve got good hands.”
“Oh my god,” I groaned, half laughing despite myself. “You’re impossible.”
“I’ll, uh… let you two handle that.” Behind me, Mason cleared his throat. “Have a good night, Y/n.”
Slumping my shoulders I huffed towards the blonde aviator holding my camera hostage for no good reason. It was annoying. Although I guess I can’t complain it’s definitely better than him arguing with my best friend all the time. Shooting him a glare I scoffed at him. “Great, you scared him off.”
“I didn’t scare him off.” Jake shrugged, still holding my camera hostage. “He just got the hint.”
“What hint?!”
“That you don’t need him hovering over you.”
I stared at him, stunned. “He wasn’t hovering. We were talking.”
“Looked like hovering from where I was standing.”
Rolling my eyes I ran at him again where he bolted into a run away from me where we started a game of cat and mouse with my camera. Jake dangled the camera from its strap near my reach but the second my fingers barely brushed it he snatched it away. Clutching my hands into fists I growled under my breath. “Jake, give. It. Back.”
He tilted his head, eyes dancing. “Say please.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Then I guess I’m keeping it.”
“You don’t even know how to use it!”
“Sure I do,” he said, lifting it to his eye. “Point and click, right?”
“Jake!”
He held his arms open with a grin on his face as he laughed with such joy. “Come and get me, Y/n.”
Kicking up some sand I charged at him with all the strength I had, slamming into his chest where he unexpectedly lost his footing. Together we tumbled down to the sandy ground becoming a tangled set of arms and legs, covered in sand from head to toe. Jake landed on his back gripping onto the camera so it didn’t hit the ground and bust while his other arm wrapped around my waist holding me against him. My palms hit his bare chest, hair falling over his face and a thick blush covering my face realizing how close we were to each other.
“Jake….”
He whispered, keeping his green eyes focused on me. “Y/n….”
“Why did you scare off, Mason?. He wasn’t doing anything wrong.”
“Yes, he was.”
Blowing a raspberry in his face I pushed my hands on his chest, forcing myself upright to stand above him with my hands on my hips. “What the heck is wrong with you, Seresin. You just scared off a guy simply talking with me.”
“That was obvious flirting, sweetheart.”
Rolling my eyes I glanced over my shoulder towards Bradley who was lazily sitting in a beach chair with his sunglasses sitting on top of his head. He shifted his gaze in my direction, raising his fist and punching the air with a cheeky smirk playing on his lips for a reason I didn’t understand at all. “You’re jealous aren’t you?” Turning my attention back to the aviator I knitted my brows together.
“I’m not jealous. I can just tell when people shouldn’t be hovering over you.”
Stepping toward him in two quick strides there was barely any distance between us then. Gazes intensely locked on one another. “You don’t have any reason to be jealous. We are not a couple, Seresin.” Our chests were nearly touching and I could feel my breath mixing with his own. My mind was trying to still understand why my best friend was smirking at me while I was talking with someone he couldn’t stand.
“You’re right. We’re not.” He responded back to me, closing more of the almost invisible gap between us. Our noses brushing against each other.
“Jake….”
Opening my mouth I went to say more until he completely closed the gap, pressing his lips down onto mine with fierce determination. His hands cradled my face as I felt my camera hit me in the side as it swung from his movements but the strap was thankfully secured around his neck so it wouldn’t hit the sand. A gasp slipped out of my mouth shortly disappearing once I kissed him back with the same level of passion that apparently had been building inside of me.
Running my hands up his chest I wrapped my arms around his neck deepening it even more. He in turn moved one hand to the back of my head, tugging on some of my hair drawing a moan from me. And we would have remained like this if it wasn’t for the fact that we needed air to breathe. Jake drew back first panting heavily while he rested his forehead against mine, holding my face in his palms still.
“We’re not a couple. I know that. And I have tried to not fall in love with you, believe me I have tried.”
I attempted to cut him off. “You don’t have to explain.”
“Yes, I do. I know it’s not what you want to hear but I tried to not fall in love with you. I tried because you’re Bradshaw’s best friend meaning you probably wouldn’t be able to stand me. But it didn’t work because I am crazy in love with you Y/n.”
Messing with the hair at the nape of his neck I felt a huge grin spreading across my face at the deep confession I had just seen drawn out from Jake Hangman Seresin. “I can’t believe you just said that.”
“Neither can I.” He chuckled as his cheeks turned a light pink catching me off guard because I swear I’d never seen him insecure or embarrassed before. “But I couldn’t face the idea of someone else being with you ... .cause I love how you always take sunset pictures. I love that you aren’t afraid to tell me when I’m acting like an arrogant idiot and I love how you know what you want out of life. And now I’m just really hoping I can be the guy for you.”
“Bradley is sooo going to kick your ass for this.” Giggling up at him I tugged his lips down to meet mine again. He chuckled into the kiss, making me laugh at the feeling.
“He actually got me to come over here. Said somethin’ like who’s that guy talking with Y/n and something else. I stopped listening once he said your name.”
A laugh came out of my mouth, gently wrapping my fingers around the chain of his dog tags. “Sounds like I’ll have to thank him then. After I kick his butt for meddling in my love life.”
“What are you gonna do to me, darlin’?”
Biting my lip I hummed, pausing to think of a response. “Stealing my camera doesn’t make this look good for you, Hangman.”
“Definitely understand. But if I can make one suggestion, can you wait until tomorrow to kick my ass cause I’d really like to keep kissin’ you.”
Jumping up I wrapped my arms and legs around his neck and waist and thanks to his quick reflexes he didn’t even come close to dropping me. “Take me to bed or lose me forever, Jake Seresin.” Nuzzling my nose against his I found some confidence despite how pink my cheeks had turned.
Jake Seresin didn’t need to be told twice, he tightened his arms around my back rushing as fast as he could to his truck parked in the parking lot. He set me down on my feet fumbling with his car keys where it took him a minute to get my door opened. The drive I don’t recall simply because I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him, thinking that if I looked away I’d wake up from this unbelievable dream where he is in love with me. Eventually we’d ended up at his place stumbling through the front door and into his bedroom. His rough hands stilled from touching me any further when I trailed my hands down his chest, looping my fingers into the bottom of his shirt tugging on it.
Raising my gaze up to meet his sea-green eyes I felt a nervous feeling growing in the pit of my stomach. “Jake, are you alright?” He was currently watching me like he’s memorizing my face.
“I….uh….I don’t want to mess this up.”
“Why do you think you would?”
He shrugged his shoulders blushing a deep red with his breathing becoming uneven with every word. “I don’t know. I’ve just….ive wanted this for so long that - I don’t want you to wake up tomorrow and wish this didn’t happen.“
Leaning up on my toes I grasped the fabric of his shirt, bringing his lips down onto mine with a faint tug of his collar. He stiffened briefly till I felt him loosen and let himself get lost in the short passionate kiss. “That isn’t gonna happen, Jake. I know you wouldn’t let that happen. Now are we going to do this or not?” Searching his facial expression I waited for his answer, knowing deep down I could get through the insecure side of this man.
It was like a switch had been flipped inside his head as he reached down grasping the bottom of his shirt yanking it up and over his head. He tossed it somewhere in the room, gently grasping the bottom of my shirt and slowly removing it. The next thing I did was bend down removing my own shorts and underneath and he removed his own. Jake took a step forward cupping my face again as we fell back onto the mattress, his body hovering above my own. “You can tell me to stop at any time.”
“Don’t you dare. Just kiss me please.” My hands found his bare chest, feeling the solid muscle beneath my fingertips.
Jake kissed me then, a deep, slow kiss that was both gentle and consuming. his eyes never leaving my face. My fingers tangled in his hair as he kissed my neck, my lips, sending shivers through me. Soon we became a mess of tangled limbs and wandering hands as we got lost in the feeling of each other. The pleasure and enjoyment came over until Jake separated from me flopping onto his back attempting to catch his breath. “I love you, Y/n.” He panted, running a hand through his tousled blonde hair.
“I love you too.” Rolling over onto my side I laid my head on his bare chest, grinning up at him as he leans down kissing my forehead softly.
