More thoughts on this au which go hand in hand with Olive's second piece <3: In my mind, Red Hood dealt with Tim directly every now and then when the empire hired bounty hunters to do their dirty job (aka, track wanted criminals/rebels/etc). Jay had survived by mastering completely concealing his presence and used the Red Hood identity to keep a facade and the empire off of his turf. He only cared about protecting his people. It took one slip at a very dire situation to be spotted by a Sith Lord. Nonetheless, he still escaped with no questions asked and no empire army chasing him... after that he thought long and hard. Maybe his presence (and force affinity) hadn't been discovered after all. He remained extra cautious though.
Tim would go out of his way to ensure he was usually the one dealing with Red Hood because if someone else -someone truly loyal to the emperor -discovered Jay was a former padawan... they would absolutely track him down and they would not stop until they killed him.
Neither said anything for a long time.

Red Hood had a new informant. One he would not name. And nobody liked it. This mystery individual had given him the location of Cobblepot’s new scheme a month ago, a warning about a big bank robbery two weeks later, and a tip to look into what the Black Mask was doing five days ago. It was good information, but Batman (being paranoid as he was) didn’t trust it, and neither did anyone else. It was likely a trap, but Jason protected his informant with such passion that nobody could get anything out of him. At least, not until today.
Jason was out of commission for a week, and Gotham was in deep trouble. The Joker had broken out of Arkham and despite thoroughly examining every inch of every abandoned or rundown theme park, amusement center, and playground in Gotham, they hadn’t found a trace. It took a mix of bribery, black mail, threat of bodily harm and a significant amount of painkillers for Jason to agree to give them instructions on how to get the information they wanted. Which is how they ended up on a random rooftop with a bag of fast food.

Two figures made an unwelcome arrival at your designated meeting place. Instead of a single pair of feet softly falling on to the roof, and the air being filled with the familiar scent of sweat, gunpowder, and campfire cologne mixing with deep fried chicken, the wind sent a wave of overpowering floral detergent, mint shampoo, and citrus no-tear soap to assault your senses. The sounds of two individuals landing harshly on the roof stabbed at your sensitive ears, and even though the moonlight glowing from behind them obscured their appearances, you could price together who had intruded upon your night.
They both scanned the roof from their vantage point, and you crouched closer to the ground and leaned against the brick box that functioned as an access point to the roof, hoping the shadows would hide you long enough to make an escape plan.
After seeming to confirm there was no human in sight, the taller of the two figures turned to examine the surrounding buildings, and the smaller crossed his arm over his chest and huffed.
“I don’t trust this,” the smaller one petulantly mumbled, quite enough you weren’t sure the man behind him could have heard, “Everything about this is suspicious, the secrecy, the location, the set up… who trades information for a burger of all things.”
“I heard you the first seven times Robin,” the taller of the two answered, dropping a familiar looking paper bag on the ground before arching into a handstand, “but this is the best — and currently the only — shot we got.” The words hung in the air for a moment before he added, “and it’s not a burger, Jay was very particular about that”
The boy huffed in frustration and looked ready to lose his temper, but with the cargo confirmed as food, your plans of a quick quiet escape were all but abandoned. Even with the smaller one — Robin — facing away momentarily to glare at his upside down companion, the temptation of food was just too strong. You hadn’t seen Red Hood in three days, nor had you eaten in just as many, and your stomach ached with need. Under better circumstances you could have dove between the two and stolen away with the food, but the past several days had been brutal, and every movement hurt. You opted to stay where you were, in hopes a better opening may present itself.
The taller of the two righted himself to his feet, and looked around at the surrounding building again, before lifting one hand to his ear, “you sure we got the right place? I don’t see anyone… no I checked, I’m sure. What do you want us to do, just wait around? For what?! Yes… Yes! I understand that, but is this really — no, I promise. And who’s fault is that?…” he spoke heredity and harshly, and with all the standard Gotham street noise closer than it could be, it took you a moment to register the mumbling of another voice. You scooted closer in hopes of hearing the other side of the conversation, but due to a mix of pain and exhaustion, you stumbled, disturbing some of the debris around you, and while the taller of the two remained seemingly oblivious to your presence, Robin’s piercing eyes locked on you your location, still obscured in the shadows.
He grabbed hold of the sword on his back, and confidently stepped forward. You hesitated for a moment, before carefully extracting yourself from the dark, staying close to the ground in hopes of seeming as small as possible. Robin froze for a moment upon first impression, though his face was unreadable. He slowly sheathed his sword, and in turn you rose from the ground to stand. He took a soft step forwards, and you did not back away. He took another slow step towards you, lowering himself slightly, trying to appear less frightening, and in turn you made a small shuffle forward. By this point Nightwing had fallen silent, watching your careful dance with his companion. A delicate back and forth until you were three feet apart.
“What are you doing here thalabun?” he asked softly, more rhetorical than anything. You weren't sure how to answer the boy, how to explain your relationship with crime ally's guardian, so you stayed there, looking at him, examining is spiky hair and soft skin, familiarizing yourself with the citrusy smell that wafted off him, listening to his faint, controlled, rithmic breaths.
“Give me the bag,” his voice was sharp and stern again, head aimed at his elder.
“No way,” came a swift response, “we need it for the informant, remember?”
“I'll only take a little, look at it!” Robin exclaimed gesturing to you, “plus we've been here for almost twenty minutes. I don’t think they’re coming.”
Nightwing seemed to mull it over, carefully examining you, before picking up the bag and launching it at a waiting Robin. Robin unwrapped the chicken sandwich, and pulled off a piece of the patty, tossing it at your feet, where you quickly lapped it up. Nightwing wandered over to where his partner was sitting on the ground and dropped beside him.
“Ok Robin. What's next? The informant is a no-show, and we still need to find the joker. Where else could he be?” they both sat in silence considering the question, pondering what — or rather where — they missed. A small, strangled ‘yip’ echoed into the damp cold of the night, and both vigilanties snapped their attention back to the fox. It yipped again, tail wagging, as if to say ask me.
“You wouldn't happen to know where the joker is, would you?” Nightwing asked, almost sarcastically. He got a yip in response, and a head bob that resembled a nod. That made him pause…
“You do?” he repeated, beginning to doubt his vision and sanity. But as if to assure him of both, the creature repeated the gesture. “Could you show us?”
That… was a bit more difficult. Your body hurt and you were tired, three days of no food, little sleep, and constant harassment from kids, store owners, and wild animals alike had taken a toll. But you wanted to help. To be useful. At least to pay back the kind souls for feeding you, but also because doing good felt nice. And very little seemed to feel nice these days. So you summoned what strength you had, and launched yourself at them, leaping between, and landing on the hard floor with surprising grace. You pushed all your energy, all your hope, and strength, and thankfulness, into your legs so that they would go, go, GO!
You made it just short of the edge of the roof before your legs gave out and you were consumed. By darkens. By pain. Your back hurt, burning with every cut and bruise you had ever received. Your legs stung and ached. Your stomach clawed at your flesh begging to be filled or released from its prison. You were surrounded by darkness. Deep and unending, it was cold and quiet, yet all too loud, swallowing you, leaving you with nothing but pain. Everything hurt. So, so much. And you were alone, with no one to treat your wounds or hug your suffering heart. There was no warmth to reach for, no soft blankets or squishy stuffed animals. Just you, alone, cold, and in pain.
Two small, steady hands buried themselves beneath you, before carefully leaning you against something soft and sturdy. A kind hand shifted to run from the top of your head to the base of your tail, before repeating the motion. It was soothing, inside and out. Slowly the pain alleviated, and your breathing evened out. The dizzy feeling lifted, and you summoned all of your will power to crack open your eyes just a bit. You were met with the soft concern of Robin, worry visible even though the mask he wore. Robin’s steady breathing softly lifted you ever so slightly, and you focused to match his breathing: in and out, in and out. He smelled clean and strongly of oranges. It reminded you of the girls home you had lived in for six months before it was shut down for feeding the kids expired food. It was not a good place, but it was kinder than many others. You had missed the smell.
“How about I carry you and you point to where we need to go?” he recommended softly, still running his hand down your spine. You basked in his warmth and soft touch for a moment longer, trying to regain your strength, before shifting in his hold and pointing at Gotham’s skyline.
“That way?” You briefly nodded in confirmation, and both boys launched themselves off the roof and into the night air.
You had never seen Gotham from this perspective. Sure you climbed up fire escapes, and sat atop many buildings, but it was nothing like this. Nothing like soaring through the air, skyscrapers flying by. The way the wind licked freely at your hair reminded you for a moment of a trip you had taken with your mother long ago. She was driving on an empty dirt road, heading to the beach. The air was sunny and warm, the breeze swayed the trees in a methodical way, and your mother had let you stick your whole upper torso out the window. Distant street noises brought you back to reality, and looking down you saw the cars and people, they reminded you of Mr. Knox’s toy train display, the one that nobody but him was ever allowed to touch. They all looked so small from here.
Eventually you all landed outside a junkyard with a broken front gate. You led them inside, between piles of broken cars and rubbish, around the sharp metal and spilled oil, all the way to a faded, rusty, ice cream truck. Its hood was dented, the paint was chipped, and it was missing its two back tires, but a distinctive, infuriating, familiar laugh radiated from the inside.
The two vigilantes exchanged a look, before Nightwing turned to you and held out a crinkled paper bag.
“I guess you were Hood's little informant,” he breathed out. You gladly accepted the payment, and retraced your steps out of the junkyard and into the concrete jungle of Gotham.
Once you were long out of view, and hidden in a grimy abandoned back alley, you softly plopped the bag on the ground. Your food was in a bag and wrapped in foil, you’d need thumbs to get it out. You didn’t like being in human form, not right now. You were skinny in both forms, but without the fur coat being a fox provided, the wind and cold seemed to sink right into your bones. It didn’t help that your small amount of clothing had definitely seen better days. But food is more important than momentary discomfort, so you shift, trading your tail and matted fur for arms and skin.
You unwrap your chicken sandwich and sink in your teeth. The bread gives way softly, and a delicious crunch sounds as the lettuce brakes away into your mouth. The tomato bleeds its sweet juices onto your tongue, and as your mouth finally closes around the first bite of food you’ve had in days, you realize that by some miracle, despite the hour weight and cold conditions, the center of your crispy, chewy chicken patty was still warm. You barely finish chewing the first mouthful before taking a second, desperate for food and warmth.
You wonder if Red Hood is ok.

That’s the plan. At least, it was the plan until you received a text from him a few hours earlier than his plane was meant to land.
Did he arrive early? You still had some cleaning to finish up and food items on the stove. If he were to come home early the surprise would be ruined.
But it was quite the contrary. Instead, you were faced with a text from him saying he wouldn’t be able to make it back for a while longer. Their plane was experiencing technical issues a few hours before they were meant to land, so they had to make an unplanned descent at a random airport. With that plane out of commission, they would have to wait for another one to be available. And with how small the airport was, who’s to say when they’ll be able to score one. Meaning your relaxation plans with Jay were cancelled.

They fussed and groaned but ultimately allowed his impatient behavior if it got him to you faster. He grabbed his dufflebag and his suitcase, then shot straight for the stairs. Jay was tired of waiting. He didn’t have it in him to stand around for the members to collect their things and pile into the elevator.
It didn’t matter much anyways. He wasn’t going back to their dorms. He was heading next door to you.
Jay watched the numbered plaques blur with every floor he conquered. One by one, he climbed each floor, his chest burning and his breathing picking up, but he wasn’t stopping when you were this close. When he finally reaches the floor, he’s bounding to the door, his fingers flying over the door panel as he puts in the code.
Once he’s inside, the contrast in energy is immediate. With all the control he can muster, Jay slips off his shoes and toes into the apartment quietly. He sets his bags down by the door and moves with quiet haste down the hall to you. The door creaks when he pushes it open, but he continues to hold his breath and walks over to the bed.
There you lay, sleeping peacefully. His heart clenched as he shrugged off his coat and put some of his weight onto the mattress. JayDick wings au where the birds of the batfam have wings (potentially omegaverse coded but not sure, if it is then Jason's an alpha and Dick's an omega and the birds refer to their family as Flock instead of Pack). The wings are kinda magical in the sense that they don't need special holes in their clothes and they can be kinda absorbed into the body but if they're in there too long they start to hurt and cramp.
Jason's wings were small and mangled from incorrectly healed bones as a child before his death (he was a red tailed hawk before death). After his resurrection he becomes a phoenix since he literally rose from the ashes. Naturally his wings are healed along with the rest of him in the Lazarus Pit so they become absolutely fuckin huge to match his frame. His feathers are black and a mixture of reds and oranges when they aren't on fire. His flames don't burn anyone he loves or cares about. When he's deep in a pit rage his flames turn Lazarus green. He heals super quickly thanks to both the Pit and being a Phoenix. His strength, speed, and agility also get buffed from the Lazarus Pit. He can also do the whole Phoenix rebirth thing but it takes awhile and massively drains energy. He might also be able to use his Phoenix fire to heal others but it's a real last ditch effort type of thing bc of how much energy it consumes (he could be weak and out of commission for several days or even weeks depending on the severity of the injury) and how painful it is for the other person (it feels like being burned despite that not actually happening and it does put a massive strain on their body). Dick has black and blue feathers (think Steller's Jay, it totally matches the Nightwing suit). Dick had the largest wings out of the birds before Jason came back so he's very much so not used to being enveloped in anyone else's wings before Jason started doing it. After he gets a taste of how safe and secure those massive flaming wings make him feel he never wants to leave them. His favorite place in the entire universe is in Jason's arms with his wings wrapped around him like a shield. Dick loves seeing how awesome Jason is at being a big brother (protective, caring, funny) but he does get massively jealous seeing him put his wings around anyone else even if it's Tim or Damian. It gets a little better after they start dating but Dick is still super possessive of those Phoenix wings (they're his you can't have them!). Tim might have cardinal wings and Damian might have harpy eagle or crow wings.
Jason and Damian met in the League of Assassins where Jason served as Damian's guard. They formed a real brotherly bond (Jason was the only person who showed Damian any true kindness aside from Talia and she wasn't able to do much for him bc of Ra's) so Jason was distracted by keeping his lil bro safe instead of cooking up revenge schemes. This means his return to Gotham is entirely different. He only goes back to Gotham bc Talia said it was getting dangerous for Damian to stay with the league so Jason went ahead to clean up some trash before Damian's arrival. He still decides to go by Red Hood but his suit will be a bit different (Talia said that's my son and I'll be damned if my son doesn't get nice things harumph). It'll be mostly black like his canon Red Hood armour but with more flame motifs and accents that look firey (the red bat is obviously replaced with a flaming Phoenix bc duh). He starts out in Gotham the same way he does in canon with his gang and stuff but he doesn't go attack Tim or arrange a confrontation with batman. His base of operations is in Crime Alley (Batman is still not allowed in his territory and will be shot at on sight but Robin is mostly ignored unless he's provoked but even then gunshots aren't aimed at him but around him as a warning and physical harm only comes in the form of punches or kicks. Nightwing is tolerated significantly more than Batman or Robin bc he's gorgeous and Jason apparently never grew out of his crush so all his bird instincts scream that Dick is a potential mate which means Jason is incapable of actually harming him. He resorts to simply pinning him down and making threats that don't sound even remotely convincing before flying away. Nightwing is confused every single time bc he's seen cowl footage from Batman and domino footage from Robin so he knows the man has a grudge against the batfam and can and will fight but apparently that doesn't extend to him??? Very curious indeed) but he does make moves in the rest of Gotham too since his goal is ultimately making it safer for Damian.
Jason holds solid power when Talia finally brings Damian to Bruce and she breaks into Arkham and kills the Joker on her way out (her and Jason have a beautiful mother son bonding moment over this for obvious reasons). Damian sneaks out to meet Jason frequently which stresses the hell out of the batfam (Dick is living there too bc Bludhaven got blown off the map and I'm not sure if that works with the canon timeline but fuck it that's how it is here, and if I decide to include content about Catalina Flores it'll definitely be her getting killed by Jason). They come to the conclusion that Damian needs to be kept busy so he's offered the Robin position (Tim had been part of the decision so there aren't any hurt feelings and Bruce also doesn't get lost in the timestream in this au unless I decide to change that later). Damian makes his Robin debut (and Tim his Red Robin one) and Jason's pissed that his baby bro now faces the dangers of Robin but he's also resigned bc he knew it was gonna happen anyways. Damian visits Jason as Robin in one of his major warehouses (he snuck away during patrol and very much so almost gave Bruce a heart attack) to announce his new title and Jason takes the opportunity to inform his goons that the new Robin is entirely off limits and is under his own protection which means that anyone who harms him will be violently slaughtered. His goons already knew he had a bit of a soft spot for Batman's birds (they very much so clocked that he's into Nightwing too) so this wasn't much of a surprise. Jason tells Damian to run to him or his gang members if he's ever in trouble or needs help that Batman won't provide (murder. He's talking about murder). Damian informs him that that was already his plan (Jason basically raised him so his personality is different than canon) and it makes Jason laugh and instantly captures all of the goon's hearts.
Eventually Damian does get into trouble and run to Jason. He was on a mission with Batman already near Crime Alley when a normal Black Mask drug bust turned into a much more dangerous brawl and Bruce had to call for back up. Nightwing was thankfully close by so he got there quickly to help but Damian had already been separated from Bruce and nowhere even close to Dick. Damian was quickly beginning to get overwhelmed as he instinctively moved towards Crime Alley and let out a panicked squawk and a call to Flock for help when one of Black Mask's big shot subordinates got a hit on him and grabbed him. Dick let out a panicked call of his own and broke free and into the air before witnessing the Red Hood, in all his blazing glory, swoop in and save his little brother with a frankly terrifying Phoenix call and a sea of flames (Jason had already been on the way bc he was secretly listening to the batcomms). Dick was very much so confused bc Damian immediately relaxed into the crimelord's arms and didn't seem to be getting burnt at all despite all the fire that was clearly burning Black Mask's goons but he didn't question it and flew to the baby bird regardless. He let out a worried-relieved-calming chirp as he got close and was surprised again when the flames didn't hurt him either. Damian chirped safe-flock-protected back at him and happily went to sit in Dick's lap when he landed. Jason trilled a low protect-flock-mine-safe and surrounded them in a wall of his flames (Dick still had no idea who he was or why he was protecting them but hearing that call somehow relaxed him almost completely). The flames then turned green and Jason went about eliminating the threat. He didn't actively kill anyone aside from the guy that had gotten Damian bc his subconscious bird brain decided that causing Dick any more unnecessary stress would be unacceptable but with all the horrible burns he inflicted and the trauma that would definitely come from remembering the haunting sound of his enraged screeching would probably make them wish he had just killed them. Since he'd taken care of the threat his instincts carried him back to Dick and Damian still huddled inside his protective wall of flame. Dick had cradled Damian in his arms and wrapped his wings around him while cooing soft reassurances. Jason definitely wasn't thinking with his rational brain when he plucked them up off the ground and deposited them safely in his lap before mirroring Dick and enveloping them in his own wings while letting out a deep comforting trill.
Bruce was panicking bc that was a vicious crimelord (a duffle bag of severed heads doesn't really radiate friendly energy) who had his sons. Naturally he tried to retrieve said sons but as soon as he got close the fire flared up and Jason all but hissed out a warning that clearly meant get any closer and I incinerate you. Tim got there just in time to witness it and he too was baffled. What did this temperamental crime lord want with Nightwing and Robin??? He chirped out a concerned worried-flock-safe?-injured? and Jason huffed a bit before opening his wings just enough to allow Tim to see that his brothers were ok. That snapped Dick out of his relaxed trance but he still couldn't find it in himself to move when this man's embrace felt so warm and safe so he settled for a confused trill. Jason promptly snapped out of his own protective trance and started to move away before being stopped by sad whistles coming from both Damian and Dick. Clearly he wasn't the only one stunned by this as he could clearly see Tim's jaw drop and Bruce's brows raise. Damian was entirely unrepentant but Dick at least looked a little embarrassed while he rushed to cover his face with his own wings. Jason sighed and let out his own reassuring whistle before manipulating his flame wall to allow Tim access (Bruce still wasn't allowed) to the bird brains in his lap. Tim took the hint and approached cautiously. With another reassuring chirp from Jason he relaxed and began the process of coaxing his two brothers out of the crimelord's lap. Jason spent the time glaring fiercely at a looming Batman. His glare couldn't be seen through his helmet but he figured his ruffled feathers and the still blazing flame wall would get the message across. Eventually Tim succeeded and Jason let out a parting trill before rocketing up into the sky and flying away. Bruce was pissed bc he wanted to arrest the crimelord for killing a man but his need to interrogate Dick and Damian for answers won so back to the cave they went (after making sure the police made it to the scene to clean up). Damian completely refused to answer any questions about how he knew the man with burning wings and started furiously screeching when pushed too far so Bruce had to back off. Dick was even less helpful bc all he could say was that he instinctively felt safe in the man's arms. When Bruce pointed out that that man was the same one who delivered a duffle bag full of severed heads to the GCPD Dick only shrugged and said it was a bird thing and that while he didn't love all the killing he did recognize that the crimelord's only confirmed kills were of irredeemable scum and he could work with that. Bruce tried to argue but Dick was tired so he snapped at him to save it for later and went up to bed.
Dick was curious about the man under the red helmet so the next time he went out as Nightwing he decided to add the alley to his patrol. He came across a group of men that clearly belonged to Hood's gang and paused to listen to their conversation. It seemed to be between a senior goon and some new hires as he mostly heard reminders of rules and advice. He was about to leave when he heard the man start talking about bat and bird protocol. The more he listened the more he was stunned. Bat protocol was fairly standard, if Batman was sighted, call it in immediately and do not engage. But bird protocol threw him for a loop. According to senior goon the birds were off limits and any harm towards them would be taken personally by the Red Hood. Dick had witnessed Hood swooping in to protect Robin but he was stunned to learn that his gang had protocol regarding their safety. The man stunned him even more as he continued. Apparently their boss was unfamiliar with Red Robin but he had decided to include him in his protection due to his affection for Nightwing and Robin (Dick had already come to the conclusion that Damian had met Red Hood before coming to Gotham and was clearly at least somewhat close to him, and Dick himself never felt any hostility from the man but affection? How the hell had he gained the affection of a crimelord??? He didn't even know the man!).
While Dick was still reeling, senior goon continued his explanation. Upon seeing Robin, Hood's goons were to approach and ask him if he needed help finding Hood or any info for a case but if he was injured, clearly running from something, or in battle they were to contact their boss immediately and do everything they could to help until he got there (Dick resolved to make sure that Damian's patrols would be as close to the Red Hood's territory as possible). Seeing Red Robin was slightly different. They didn't have to approach him and ask if he needed anything but if Red Robin approached them they were to answer any questions as best they could without jeopardizing any of their own operations. If Red Robin was injured, clearly running away from something, or looked to be in a fight he couldn't win they were to do the same as they would for Robin (Dick was glad that he and Damian somehow got the Red Hood to like them enough to include Tim in his protection and he'd definitely be showing him his domino footage of this conversation in the cave). Finally, if they came across Nightwing, the goons were to approach him and ask if he wanted to get in touch with Hood for information or to be left alone and then act accordingly. If he was injured, clearly running from something, or in a fight they were to contact their boss immediately and do whatever they could to help, but they shouldn't intervene in his battles if he didn't seem to be in danger of getting seriously injured (Dick figured he was gonna get the same treatment as his brothers but hearing it out loud and Hood's clear assumption that Nightwing could handle himself made his stomach flutter and his cheeks turn red).
Apparently there was more to say as the men kept speaking. Inappropriate commentary on or to Robin and Red Robin was to be responded to in the same manner they were to respond to it if it were about any other kid: gunshot to the kneecap and a warning that it'd be their head if they ever did it again. They should also be added to Red Hood's list of potential sex offenders to be monitored and executed if necessary (wow Dick didn't know this guy could get any better but he did!). One of the new goons asked if they were allowed to talk about Nightwing since he was an adult and senior goon smacked him upside the head before telling him he'd keep his mouth shut if he knew what was good for him. Dick was confused bc while he did find it disgusting when people looked at and spoke of him like he was a piece of meat, he didn't quite understand senior goon's reaction since he was in fact an adult. The man's face twisted for a moment before giving the goon an explanation. Apparently he had once witnessed the Red Hood completely shatter the jaw of a man who had been talking about all the disgusting things he would force Nightwing to do if he ever got his hands on him, and then proceed to stomp so hard on the man's balls he swears he heard a pop and there was definitely blood. All of the goons shuddered and Dick almost swooned. Yeah he was definitely gonna have the get to know this crimelord better.
I found this ramble in my notes app and now it's everyone else's problem lol. I definitely wanna try to write out a full fic for this (one with proper punctuation and stuff so that it's easier to read lol) but I'm not gonna have time for that until maybe some time next year ugh. I'm writing a fic on Duke Thomas as a college student and want to know what Duke's civilian life looks like. Would he even really have a life because he's a day shift vigilante?

Okay so he does have a life, the same way someone with an early morning or 9 - 5 job would to some extent. So try to think of the hours in that way as it's a lot easier to contextualise.
In his civilian life - what we see of it in Batman and the Signal - he's living with his cousin Jay, who's stepped up due to Elaine and Doug being out of commission. Jay is former military and from what we see is prerty protective of his baby cousin. He's also seen with Izzy who is a love interest but can also be written as a close friend depending on what you want, and Riko who is also a close friend. Both of them are from the We Are Robin comics and met Duke through that movement.
Before he joined WAR, Duke was going to school and there's been no mention of him dropping out in the comics so it's likely he worked his dayshift around that and would continue to do the same with college, especially as college can be a little more flexible time wise and involves more freedom.
Also, I know I say this a lot, but Duke is very community based. So when writing him as a civilian it wouldn't be out of character to have him checking in on friends/neighbours or involved in programmes to help his community.
It's also said in some comics that he has an interest/talent in writing so you could play around with that for studies or hobbies of his. And in another comic it's said that he has self care days with Cass and Steph where they play mini golf or do something else lighthearted and fun.
Depending on what you want to do with Duke's parents, he could be visiting them in the hospital they're being treated in (they were Jokerized when he was a kid) or you could have them sane again (as they did with Elaine in Urban Legends) and portray Duke's close relationship with them.
Duke also dragged Damian to the cinema one time when he was in civvies so there's always that too.
Duke has a pretty full life both in and out the suit (poor guy must be exhausted fr) so there's a lot to play around with depending on where you want to go with his story and character.

in reality, he’s largely commissioning his well-traveled friends. jakes always taking bounties in the neighboring kingdoms, so heeseung will gladly take the opportunity to send him off with a list of peculiar roots and harvests to bring home.
(note: heeseung only asks jake for plants. learned very quickly that toad eyes and gryphon hearts were more of a jay commission. you’d think a bounty hunter would be able to stomach taking out animals. but even they have their boundaries)
his business is on the lower level of his home and he resides upstairs of the cottage. he lives in the forest, just on the outskirts of town so he can keep a small stream of customers, but out of the way enough as to not be bothered. most of his money comes from important clients with the large and complicated orders anyway. he’s remedied the oddest diseases, created strangely specific poisons– its always been a natural talent of his to know exactly what ingredients go in the most random potion you can think of
heeseung feels absolutely no need to market himself, no matter how much his bard friend, sunoo, insists on the importance of networking. he makes enough to maintain his quiet life in the forest, and enough to pay his friends for their travels. thats all he needs.
now im branching off into where you fit in. thinking of different possibilities
maybe you’re one of his gatherers. you mistake one of the flowers he sent you to get for something else and the one you grabbed is accidentally poisonous. you turn up to his shop lightheaded and he has to treat you!!!!! you’ve passed out the second you arrived to his shop so he has to carry you upstairs to his bed. he’s never housed another person before!!! his upstairs house isn’t even equipped to let any of his friends visit or more than 15 minutes. but maybe he finds having you up there with him isn’t too bad.
another thought: heeseung will very rarely be found outside of his shop. only occasionally to gather plants and materials for himself at godawful hours in the night when he can't sleep. the problem is. you really like him. and you don't have much business to be found at an apothecary that often. so you have to make up random reasons to keep visiting his store. one day you’ll need a charm to keep your bread from going stale too fast. (thats never been an issue) or. ooooh your plants keep dying… can you give me a potion for that!!! (you don’t know how to garden.) he never catches onto your excuses and instead is oddly attached to helping you out with your little tasks. hes being paid good money to work on this potion for his wealthy client. but instead putting all his energy into helping you nourish your fake garden.
last idea: maybe you’re a lower level thief. you know better than to blatantly steal from a man who has multiple shelves of toxins. so you decide to make up a story about a sick friend whose illness took a turn for the worse and you don’t know what to do!!
and just as you weren't foolish enough to outright steal from heeseung, he’s no different. he’s heard enough lies in his life to know when someone's trying to con him. especially with his profession. but the thing is, he doesn’t care. he plays along and gives you a few balms and tells you it’ll help your friend. he even gives them to you for free, since the situation seemed so desperate. you thank him and take your leave, not thinking too much about the fact that simple balms weren’t enough to save someone on their deathbed. heeseung knows what you're up to, and made something you’d easily be able to sell for a good chunk of money.
you sneak away to a nearby city and end up making a good amount off of his balms. but on your way back home, the bag of coins weighs heavy in your hands.. sighhhsss. thievery isn’t for you…... when you get back, you decide to return to the apothecary and wait for a moment where heeseung isn’t on the floor to slip in. you leave the bag of gold on his desk with a note reading ‘my friend wasn’t actually sick. im sorry’ and quickly exit before he sees you. but to your surprise, the pouch is back on your kitchen counter when you wake up in the morning with a parchment attached. ‘i know.’
