1) this is really well thought-out. 2) I have immense respect for someone that can hand-sew an entire project. I can barely stand to do the little bit at the end of my projects.
1) I’m glad you think so! I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while, but I finally wrote it out at like 7 in the morning on basically no sleep, so I’m honestly a bit surprised it ended up being pretty much what I was trying to say (other than having to fix a few spelling errors).
2) It’s always fun to find other people who sew, hand or machine (I’m happy with my hand-sewing and couldn’t handle one if I wanted to, but other people do some really cool things with them)! I meant it when I said I’m completely incapable of using a sewing machine, but I didn’t even try one until about two years after I’d started and by then I was very used to hand-sewing. Sometimes I have to take extended breaks, weeks or longer, in the middle of something - tendonitis flare-ups are the worst - and even if I sew daily it usually takes at least two-three weeks to finish something of that’s around middle ground on intricateness, so to speak, depending on how many pieces there are. I actually find it really relaxing, most of the time. It’s repetitive and I usually listen to podcasts while I work. I’ve found it’s really good for calming down when I have anxiety issues or just de-stressing. Mostly I make plushies, since they’re fun to design and I like having them, but I’ve also made bags and clothing (and accidentally become the go-to person for repairing damaged fabric-things in my family).
I’ve tried to learn to use one, but it’s mainly a physical problem and I probably won’t ever be able to overcome that. That part in the post about people asking why I don’t just buy a sewing machine? That’s something I get a lot - although oddly almost never from people who actually do sew regularly, who usually react similar to what you said about hand-sewing and that’s always nice to get. The other, though? That’s so incredibly annoying and it makes me angry just to think about it... it’s very, very much not that simple and even if it was I put a ton of effort into what I do and that’s just dismissing it.
(The origin of that post may or may not have some roots in pent-up rage over sewing... I stand by where it ended up going, though. I’ve had some issues with Spoon Theory ever since I first heard it and this makes so much more sense to me.)
My sewing tag - with the caveat that most of the stuff that (basically anything that does’t have progress pics or say when I finished them in the caption) are really old things I ported over from where they’d originally been posted on my DeviantArt page. I’m still proud of them, but some of them are pretty rough from when I was still figuring things out. I’m completely self-taught and there was definitely a learning curve. And I’ve been somewhat lax on posting more recent stuff, because I keep forgetting to take pictures of them...
