Seabird Saturday: common murre

This week's seabird is the common murre or common guillemot (Uria aalge). A member of the auk family, the common murre dives underwater to hunt fish and can maneuver and propel itself by using its wings to "fly" in the water. In rare cases, they can dive as deep as 180 m (590 ft) in search of food. They lay their eggs in colonies on cliff faces Common murres are found in coastal areas of the northern Pacific and Atlantic oceans and the Arctic Ocean.
