"Soon my love we will join the others under the museum lights, but for now, under the starlight, you are glowing"
The last Passenger Pigeon and last Carolina Parakeet on earth both died at the Cincinnati zoo in the early 1900s.
Passenger Pigeon
I went through this phase where I learned about lots of extinct animals and the passenger pigeon always stood out to me. There’s a taxidermy specimen at my local museum so I went to sketch him one day and polished it up afterwards. Love these little guys 🥲

day 12 of drawdinosdaily
We watch for movement in the trees, And breathe life into their smoothened pulp. We listen for a snatch of song, And write symphonies in notes we will never hear. We grasp at feathers, And try to hold fast. We paint birds, And we hope, That they will, Be seen, Be known, Be loved. That they will live on, In more than just our paintings.
From Grasping at Feathers, an ode to bird artists, by Chantelle Chapman.
Illustration in traditional gouache, 8x10 inches, featuring iconic extinct birds of America, including: Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, Carolina Parakeet, Passenger Pigeon, Molokai O'o, Bachman's Warbler, Heath Hen, Labrador Duck, Great Auk, Eskimo Curlew, and Dusky Seaside Sparrow.
Third bird for this year’s avian august : the Kaua‘i ‘ō ‘ō (Moho braccatus) foraging on some ‘ōhi‘a (Metrosideros polymorpha).
The extinction of this species is a hauntingly sad and lonely story (as they’re all…) and that’s why i chose to draw a pair, seeking to heal my heart a bit :’)
