Common Raven

(Corvus Corax)

Status: Least concern (IUCN), Low concern (R2R)

The common raven is a large, all black corvid found all across the northern hemisphere. In sunlight, their plumage can have a purple or blue sheen as a result of iridescence. Ravens from colder regions are generally larger with longer beaks. They can thrive in varied climates and prefer wooded areas nearby wide open land, or coastal regions. They eat nearly anything they can get ahold of, from carrion to small animals to even dung from wolves or sled dogs.

Fun fact: Common ravens often perform aerobics, such as sudden dives, rolls, and dropping & catching objects midair.

A common raven perches high up in a spruce tree, scanning for threats and/or opportunities.

I count myself lucky every time I get a shot of a raven — they like to soar up high (where the distance makes it hard to get a good photo) and perch in spruce trees (where the tree makes it hard to get a good photo). This one, however, decided to grace me with a glamour shot as they look over the open area nearby.
