A common raven (Corvus corax) perches on a wall in Scotland, UK
by Iain H Leach
the common raven is a large, intelligent corvid found along the northern hemisphere. they are the heaviest passerine bird, with the heaviest individuals weighing up to 2 kg (4.4 lb). they have an opportunistic diet, allowing them to thrive alongside humans; in addition to eating eggs, nuts, fruits and seeds, they will feed on human food waste. common ravens are social birds that typically remain in mated pairs, and show devotion to their families. once paired, common ravens tend to stay with their mate for life, and re-use the same nesting location to raise clutches year after year. while some common ravens have been documented to live upwards of twenty years, the average lifespan of a wild raven is closer to ten or fifteen years.
