December 28, 2023 - Common Scimitarbill (Rhinopomastus cyanomelas) Found in parts of eastern and southern Africa, these scimitarbills live in woodlands and shrublands. They mostly eat insects, as well as spiders, small fruits, tree seeds, and possibly gecko eggs and aloe nectar, foraging alone, in pairs, or in family groups and often joining mixed-species flocks. Nesting in cavities in trees, including those built by woodpeckers and barbets, females incubate clutches of two to four eggs while males bring food to the nest. Though females initially feed the chicks with food brought by the males, both parents later gather food for the chicks.
