uhhmmm something something... interplay/obsidian fallout's insistence on treating people as having the same basic motivations and inclinations regardless of time, place or context, and having those be so grounded in reality vs. bethesda fallout's fixation on brand recognition & wacky gimmicks taken so far that it warps even ordinary people in the post-apocalyptic setting into bizarre caricatures of humanity as a *baseline* rather than the exception... the latter approach exhausts and grates on me, while the former is darkly cheering, in a way
i did write this after watching a video about how bethesda fallout NPCs don't clean their permanent living spaces unlike NPCs in IP/O fallout games and it's such a small but stark example that kind of acts as a microcosm of the two teams' differences in tone. like, look at all of history bro. post-apocalypse or not, i think that humans don't like living in filth. fuck's sake, every modern fallout 4 player i know has Scrap Everything installed for a reason
